I would give Canelo a credit for fighting Joe.Joe is not Bivol or beterbiev, but he is clearly better than all guys Canelo beat at 168.

        Your thoughts

I don’t think that’s true. I think it’s the opposite. Canelo can’t fight any fighter without repercussions. The media and critical boxing fans remind him before and after every fight that they are not happy with his opponent selection.

Canelo is the only active fighter from 168-200lbs who can catch so much flak from fans for fighting Makabu. There isn’t a single soul on Earth who would make a big fuss out of Makabu vs Breidis, Dorticos or Okolie. Or Makabu vs Beterbiev, Bivol, Benavidez or Smith Jr. Not a single soul. It’s Canelo, so he is cherrypicking a guy who wouldn’t be a cherrypick for literally no one else from 168-199lbs.

Agree, he's definitely not on Bivol or Beterbiev's level, I think Joe Smith is a tougher win than say BJS or Callum Smith.
            Good point.
I think it's fair to say that, better yet, better win than Kovalev too at 175.

I mean it can be debatable though.
Caleb Plant win was definitely a great win.
Joe Smith stylistically is easier for Canelo.
              But I feel your point.

                True, but remember this man:
ALL fighters at Canelo's status in the sport get or have gotten criticized.
He has all the leverage with the sanctioning bodies and promoters because of his star status and momentum and that is where the reprecussions won't effect Canelo at all. I mean the reality is, whether we like it or not, he can do what he wants in the sport and have no negative consequences.

Just look at how Mayweather Jr was criticized. Any fighter who is at the top will get mostly criticized, it is just the reality of the sport.
