his brain is his biggest problem. He thinks he's a superstar..
What's Teofimo Lopez's Biggest Problem
Collapse
-
His style is fine; boxer-puncher. His ability is good; great technique, solid base. His natural gifts are solid; good pop and hand speed.
His problem is, he has a mind of a stereotypical hispanic from New York City. Those types that carry an inferiority complex and compensates by being as delusional as Eubanks Jr. about everything that is only exacerbated by having a father that is even worse than he is.
At his core, Teo doesn't seem that bad. You can see glimpses when he corrects himself and says "You know. I don't even want y'all booing or nothing. I take my loss." (though he was sore af about his '0' being gone)
Part of him isn't really that character but he is clearly a product of his upbringing and environment which makes that facade show up more times than not.
He needs to get away from his pops, get a blue collar coach, and get away from the city. Go live out in Omaha or some s/hit, get involved with Crawford's team or Virgil Hunter etc. to clear his mind of all that new york mentality nonsense he has going on.Comment

Just an emotional guy kinda like Kieth Thurman, letting Paul Malignaggi in his head at the presser. While cooler heads prevail, Te'o is still clapping at Haney, saying the n word this n word that. But Devon is cool hand Luke in this instance, calm cool and collected. Just like Malignaggi was when Thurman tried to rile him up: wasn't working.Comment

Great postHis mental health. He's way too erratic and emotional even by boxing standards.
I've never seen a fighter cry over his daddy issues on national tv in the build up for a fight before Lopez did it. I'm not even surprised he lost like this because he was bound to go flying off the rails with way he is and the people he has around him.Comment

Thurman is not nearly as emotional as Teofimo Lopez is. The only world champions in recent years who I think are more emotional than Teofimo are Jermell Charlo and Deontay Wilder.Just an emotional guy kinda like Kieth Thurman, letting Paul Malignaggi in his head at the presser. Good point. Kambosos had something to do with Lopez problems on that Saturday night. Sure Lopez had bad corner advice from his old man, yeah he's boiled down to 135, family drama galore....but those issues never seemed to bother him when he's up against Mason Menard or Diego Magdaleno. They didn't magically appear for the Nakatani fight (where he struggled) and for this fight and then disappear for the rest of his wins.Probably could start by not keeping his left hand so low in that philly shell kinda position. People been saying for ages how he is open to right hands, particularly overhands. Kambosos did well to exploit that and was smart not to throw his weird lead right uppercut he often used to.
Kambosos came in with an excellent game plan, he was the visibly smaller man but he survived Teo's power and dished his own punishment in return.Comment

How high do you rate Commey & Nakatani? Outside of Loma Teo has effectively the same resume as George. Except Bey and Selby are harder to separate from as negative nancy’s.Arrogance, foolishness, and his Dad.
Everyone was saying Kambosos resume was thin, well if you look at his you will see that outside of Loma, Commey & Nakatani, his resume is also pretty thin. After beating Loma his head got too big, listened too much to the chatter, and didn't realize that even though it was a unanimous decision, it was a competitive bout with an undersized, previously injured opponent.
Instead of being a pro about things and ever striving to improve, or studying your opponent, he bought into everything good that was being said about him, and didn't focus on things he could improve. His belief in being "the Takeover" did not serve him well, it seems after getting that decision over Loma he thought it would be an easy ride from there.
Boxing, like many other art forms is a never ending process of learning, he thought he knew it all, or enough to get an easy ride from there on.
He's a good fighter even dethroned, but considering a more experienced trainer that might instill some mental discipline & balance would go a long way for him.
He needs a real trainer and to learn some fundamentals and lift less weights.Last edited by SplitSecond; 11-30-2021, 03:55 AM.Comment
