Breaking: Crawford-Porter garners 135k ppv buys

Welcome to The Ring. The bible of boxing. All access to boxing's latest news, matches, fights and events.

The Ring has learned through multiple reliable sources that last Saturday’s WBO welterweight title fight between Terence Crawford and Shawn Porter garnered 135,000 pay-per-view buys on ESPN pay-per-view, through ESPN+.

The 34-year-old Crawford (38-0, 29 knockouts) defended the WBO title for the fifth time in an exciting clash, stopping Porter (31-4-1, 17 KOs) for the first time in his career before a sold-out crowd of 11,568 at the Michelob ULTRA Arena at Mandalay Bay.

“I feel like there was a lot of opportunities left on the table,” Crawford told Porter Tuesday night on “The Porter Way Podcast.” “You know what I mean? Not only with fighters, but also with pay-per-view. Like for instance, me and Shawn Porter fought on a app. There were so many people that was telling me they don’t know how to get the app on the TV, they don’t know how to do it.

“And, you know, the average elderly or person that doesn’t, you know, know tech, they not gonna know how to get the app on the TV. So, what do they do? They don’t buy it. You know, so I feel like, you know, that was a setup [in] its own right, right then and there.”

According to Keith Idec of Boxingscene, Crawford-Porter out-performed Crawford’s first two pay-per-view main events – victories over Viktor Postol in July 2016 (reportedly 50,000) and Amir Khan in April 2019 (reportedly 125,000).

Crawford knocked Porter twice in the 10th round, when Kenny Porter, Shawn’s father and trainer, ended the fight at 1:21 of the 10th.

The 135,000 PPV figure missed the estimated break-even mark of 150,000 PPV buys. It also may speak of Crawford’s marketability as a PPV attraction.

The Canelo Alvarez-Caleb Plant drew 800,000 PPV buys on Nov. 6 in Las Vegas. Alvarez is the universally accepted No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world, and Crawford is considered among the top-3 pound-for-pound fighters. The Ring has Crawford No. 3 on its pound-for-pound list.

After the fight, Porter, 34, announced his retirement.

It's piss poor numbers. In my opinion Crawford is the number 1 American Boxer, unbeaten and highly decorated. He may be a bit quiet and boring outside of the ring but he has an entertaining style in it.

But then in the grand scheme of things considering the size of the American Market even the so called PPV stars like Tank, Spence and Wilder do weak numbers. Anything under 500k
In that market should be seen as a disappointment.

But strangling women, getting drunk and crashing cars or being all racist while playing with gold plated weapons seems to be able to gain you an extra 50 to 100k in PPV sales so Bud start beating your woman

Sure Bud all these elderly people were just clamoring to see this fight but couldn’t figure out the app. The 70+ market is a big one for Crawford. Had the olds been able to buy it this fight does a million plus.

        Pretty rough.

I doubt Spence-Crawford gets done at 70-30 or even 65-35 in Spences favor, even though the numbers show against a common opponent Crawford draws half of what Spence does.

If Crawford goes to PBC and beats a couple more of their well known guys in 2022, hopefully we get Spence-Crawford for undisputed down the line.

I usually hold the big fights at my house and the casuals alongside with the MMA fans barely knew who Crawford is. He might be the best fighter in the USA at this time but he has no name recognition.

Yeah, so looks like Iole was off with his numbers. Everyone is saying it did less than 150,000. That's not much improvement from the Khan fight.

            Shame, very good fight.

Doesn’t matter how good a boxer you are now.

What matters mostly is your ability to have a big social media presence and keep giving people content. The only thing 90% of people care about or hear about is right on the screen they’re glued to on the phone in their hand. If you can’t be among that information getting burned into peoples eyes then you don’t matter and you get lost in the pack. That’s just the world we live in.

I know self promotion has always been important but now it’s a totally different world where it’s right in your face moving so fast and you don’t matter if you don’t make a presence.

Most of these boxers who are complaining they can’t get big fights or not doing big sales or anything often have themselves to blame because they don’t know how to self promote and make people want to watch them. They have no presence outside boxing nerds on a nerdy forum like this.

Porter and Crawford haven’t even got a million Instagram followers worldwide combined. That’s absolutely nothing for 2 supposed top athletes.

Ryan Garcia has 8.7m on his own because he understands how it works. I bet if/when he ends up in a real big fight worth a PPV, he will do good numbers. It’s not rocket science, if you know how to self promote and grow your audience. you will attract more viewers. You don’t have to be a clown and hanging out with Jake Paul but at least know how to sell yourself and get your name out there.

Better start apologizing to Spence and take that 60/40 split before Spence changes his mind.
