Always makes me laugh when Hearn is referred to as a 'veteran promoter' like in this article.
it was only 2010 when he announced himself on stage when he lumped his money on Audley Harrison beating a prime Haye. Think he managed to land one punch before getting flopped in 3.

If Makabu was a 'huge, huge puncher' he would have wiped out Bellow like Stevenson did at light heavy. Bellow loves to talk up past opponents like he did the shot David Haye to make himself look better than the average to decent fighter he was. Canelo should not be allowed to fight for the cruiser title he still has David Benavidez and Bivol and Beterbiev at light heavyweight both who I'm sure would be favoured to beat the ordinary Makabu.

I'm not buying this BS one bit.
It's obviously Canelo picking the weakest link at CW just so he can have a commentator say 'He held championships from junior middle to cruiserweight'.
We may have thought after Canelo's stunning 11-month sweep of the 168-pound division ( one of the weaker divisions but still a great achievement ) might have signaled to the fans that Saul was a new fighter, focused on his resume, his legacy - but no wait a minute.
Canelo took over the Mayweather blueprint for picking opponents when the torch passed.
Even Canelo's undisputed run can be subject to critical questions. Many pundits remarked how 'In this day and age it's amazing that Canelo was able to achieve this despite all the politics.'
Well, Canelo is in a position where he answers to nobody but himself and the dollar. Any other ordinary fighter attempting to do the same would have had a completely different experience, but let's still give him credit for fighting four times in 11 months. That deserves kudos no matter what.
And Canelo was just about to get on a wave of unprecedented popularity, respect, admiration, kudos...and then he snaps back to the old Canelo some of us are cynical of.
If Canelo, as he claims over and over, wants to 'fight the best for my legacy' then he must be getting advice from a half-witted drunk.
If Canelo does go through with the plan to fight Makabu (WHO?) who interestingly only stands at 6", and has hardly any names on his resume of note then most fans will go back to viewing the Canelo that drove GGG crazy with a promise of a third fight, who, when the pandemic hit, had a hissy fit that he wasn't getting his 370 million 11-fight deal, broke with Golden boy and ODLH, and who tested positive for clenbuterol.
A fighter who has never fought overseas.
Now interestingly, the ONE fight fans really think is a 168-pound mega-fight is Benavidez. If Canelo was to defend his four belts against a guy considered probably to be more of a threat than Plant, Smith, Saunders, Jacobs, and Fielding. Perhaps.
Canelo has fought taller guys a lot more recently so why jump from a 190-pound+ 6" nobody than a 6" Benavidez with a bigger fan base and what would amount to a real 50-50 fight?
Is Canelo not willing to lose his W record, so therefore he does things that seem to be wildly challenging, but are in fact uber analyzed risk assessments.
Canelo has now entered his 30's and will still be around for another 5 years. Maybe in 5 years, people won't care that he fought Makubu.
But some will care if he never fights Benavidez, Bivol, Charlo, and Andrade, who I'm sure would be willing to risk it all for the Canelo sweepstakes.

[QUOTE=daggum;n31183740]
he weighed 175 on fight night against trout. it was crazy how he drained himself just to avoid that fight. its no suprise he is performing better. hes just not drained. also ped's. the whole reason canelo and cotto fought at 155 was so he could pretend he wasnt a real 160 pounder. he was setting up the duck in advance. thats high level stuff. just like ducking beterbiev. why not petition the wbc to fight him, he has the wbc belt...oh no gotta go to 168 to fight yildram! too small! oh now makabu? weird!
[/QUOT
Your conclusion might be right, but it was Cotto who insisted they fight at a catchweight. Cotto also insisted that the championship fight with Maravilla be at a catchweight. I don't know that Canelo believes he would lose to Beterbiev, a lot of people are picking Canelo to win that one, but the point of fighting at Cruiser is to capture the 5th belt. That would be a first for a Mexican. As for his ducking this guy or that guy because he hasn't fought them, to be consistent would you also agree that Charlo and Benevidez are ducking Beterbiev, Bivol, Smith, and each other? Would also you agree that Hagler ducked all the light heavyweights of his era?

I don’t feel that he’s ducking anyone because i honestly feel he beats everyone including Beterbiev. He’s not eager to jump in there with him for sure it’s not the same as the Golovkin ducking he was doing back then. He has so many options now where as back then the fans only wanted one fight and he just kept fking around fighting Smith Khan, Chavez
i don’t see a problem with him taking this 1 off at CW. Dude just fought 4x in a year (which is unheard of these days) & beat 3 undefeated champs back to back to back& became undisputed. Let him have his tuneup. If after this one he pulls some bullshhh then let him get flamed like he deserves.Stuntman Mike likes this.

I like Canelo but let's be real this a well orchestrated cherry pick.
No different than Broner vs Paulie. And look what happened once he fought a real 147lber.
But if Canelo fights someone good afterwards it shouldn't be no issue but if he never fights the obvious names that been floating around then it's gonna look bad imo
