You can't stop people posting in your threads. I doubt the mods can change that even if they wanted to, it's due to vbulletin. (the software that the forum runs on)

But you could do that on the old template before the update. And I think the template was vbulletin as well.

Anyway, XenForo creates the best forum software/templates and the company is also British. Boxingscene needs an upgrade if it wants more traffic.

You could indeed, but you can't do on the new version.

I imagine it's a design feature. On the old site, certain posters with enormous ignore lists would start popular threads and then lots of posters were excluded from the discussion.

Those users then get annoyed and move elsewhere, and the forum loses traffic.

Boxingscene was forced to upgrade due the old versions of vbulletin no longer being compatible with the latest versions of PHP.

You can't run insecure PHP, if you do, you end up getting hacked.
