Comments Thread For: Dominant Performance Sets Shakur Stevenson Up For Bigger Things

By Lyle Fitzimmons - Every now and then, you see it. You may not even be able to specifically define it, but it's there. Such is the case with Shakur Stevenson. Maybe you notice his footwork. Perhaps you focus on his hand speed. Or it could be the way he carries himself before a significant fight.

Valdez imo is forced into a corner. In my opinion this is a fight that he can win, but he won’t fight Shakur.

This may be a maker-breaker fight for Bob. Arum may not pull what he pulled with Bud, or Stevenson my cross over..sort of like Floyd did in time.

Oscar, Floyd, Cotto, and Mikey, just to name a few! Bob admitted he killed the Pacquaio vs. Crawford fight! He might just make Valdez vs. Navarette too!

Shakur Stevenson Upset About Oscar Valdez Vs. Emanuel Navarrete Talk
          October 26, 2021

Shakur Stevenson is upset with hearing the media and Top Rank talking about WBC super featherweight champion Oscar Valdez possibly fighting Emanuel Navarrete next rather than him.

Shakur, 24, is going to have to chill out for a while and let the Valdez vs. Navarrete play out. While the Valdez-Navarrete fight is stewing, Shakur needs to back up his tough talk about being willing to fight Vasily Lomachenko.

Stevenson (17-0, 9 KOs) feels he deserves to fight the undefeated Valdez (30-0, 23 KOs) next in a unification fight after the best performance of his career last Saturday night in stopping WBO 130-lb champion Jamel ‘Semper Fi’ Herring (23-3, 11 KOs) in the tenth round at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta.

Top Rank may have other ideas for Valdez, who is been around longer than Shakur as a professional and is arguably more popular than him. What Top Rank may choose to do is have the talented two-division world champion Emanuel ‘El Vaquero’ Navarrete (35-1, 29 KOs) move up from 126 to challenge Valdez for his WBC 130-lb title.

Valdez vs. Navarrete would attract a lot of interest from boxing fans, and the winner of the match would see their popularity increase substantially.

In the meantime, it’s believed that Top Rank wants to match former three-division world champion Vasily Lomachenko with Shakur at 130 or 135.

Stevenson mentioned at the post-fight press conference last Saturday night that he was open to fighting Lomachenko (15-2, 11 KOs), and that he wouldn’t duck anybody. If that’s the case, a fight between Shakur and Lomachenko is perfect for the first quarter of 2022.

Lomachenko will have to win his next fight against Richard Commey on December 11th, but that shouldn’t be a problem. Once Lomachenko beats Commey, that’ll set up a thrilling fight against Stevenson in early 2022.

“There’s only one fight left. It’s the biggest fight in the division. Oscar [Valdez] can’t keep ducking. It’s time to fight,” said Shakur Stevenson last Saturday night in calling out WBC super featherweight champion Oscar Valdez following his tenth round knockout win over Jamel Herring.

It’s me vs. Oscar Valdez. There’s nothing else to look forward to. The 130-pound division, let’s unify. Let’s get it,” said Shakur.

Shakur should NOT go to 135 for Loma! Loma needs to come to 130! Stevenson is not ready for 135! Maybe 2023!

Roger Gutierrez vs Chris Colbert targeted for February 19th on Showtime

Dan Rafael reports that WBA “world” super featherweight champion Roger Gutierrez and interim champion Chris Colbert, whom the sanctioning body ordered to fight for the now-vacant “super” title earlier this year, are “penciled in” to fight February 19th on Showtime.

Venezuela’s Gutierrez (26-3-1, 20 KO) seemed destined for opponent status after falling short against Rene Alvarado, Hector Tanajara, and Oscar Duarte, only to reignite his career by upsetting Alvarado for the title in January. He kept the momentum going seven months later with a decision win in the rubber match, and now that the WBA finally committed to paring down their belts, he’s got a shot at the real thing.

He figures to be a sizable underdog against Colbert (16-0, 6 KO), who’s coming off of strong wins over Jezreel Corrales, Jaime Arboleda, and most recently late replacement Tugstsogt Nyambayar. “Prime Time” definitely looks like the goods at 25 years old, though Gutierrez will undoubtedly make him work for it.

I would love to see Loma fight Stevenson simply from a stylistic vantage point. My question is what is the benefit for Loma. If he wins people will say Stevenson bit off more than he can chew and if he loses he tanks his chances at bigger fights moving forward.

Stevenson's stock certainly seems to have risen. People were sitting on him after his previous performance. A lot of people only watch boxing for the action. Not everyone appreciates defensive skill. I hope Shakur is able to keep the momentum and get unification fights. The talent is obvious

Definitely a "bigger" benefit fighting Stevenson then Commey! Loma should be targeting Devin Haney for 2022, but if he (Arum) wants an in-house opponent, then Stevenson is the guy!

He stunk out the joint in his previous fight. The criticism from Tim Bradley and others was necessary.

I thought he looked much better and more entertaining this past weekend.
