I just watched this fight for the first time.
Keep in mind that I'm an unbiased observer in that I don't particularly like either fighter. I mean I like them just fine, I'm just not particularly a fan of either one and felt Shane Mosley beat Cotto by close decision in their match.
I scored it as best as I could by watching each round closely. I scored it 114-113 for Miguel Cotto. Clottey simply didn't do enough to win, he just doesn't throw enough punches, and definitely not enough combinations. One thing you have to remember, in the similar way that Oscar beat Sturm is that 10 decent landed 1 at a time punches per round does not out do 30-40 punches thrown viciously in combination from the other fighter even if he landed slightly less punches.
Yes Clottey's defense is very good but Cotto was still out throwing and often times out landing him.
I felt the outcome could have been somewhat different if it wasn't for the brutal cut on Cotto's eye, and coming from a guy that was previously disqualified in a fight for head butting (Clottey) I felt it was a shame that he did it again. Also I felt his theatrics following his fall to the ground in the 5th round was hilarious and disingenuous. Clottey won himself no fans with that considering it was HIS fault that he was thrown down because he tried to lunge at Cotto and hug him in a cowardly fashion.
Anyway, I was half hoping that I would see the fight as a victory for Clottey because I do like him and I'm from New York and sometimes the Cotto cartel fans annoy me but I had to be honest with myself and Cotto pulled it off by 1 point. Harold Lederman had it 114-113 also but my card was slightly different in that we had a few rounds switched around.
I thought that Emmanuel Steward's commentating in the fight was some of the most de****able and heinous that I've ever heard in my life. By the 3rd or 4th round I literally turned my sound off because his ********** rectum rimming of Clottey was so pathetic I couldn't stand it anymore. They really need to get rid of him he's one of the worst commentators in the sport.
Cotto was absolutely owning Clottey for the first half of the fight and Steward kept wailing on and on about how Cotto's punches are ineffective while Clottey's are all perfect and landing and how much better of a boxer Clottey is.
Then when Cotto starts doing real good and dominates Clottey suddenly Steward gets quiet and doesn't talk, what a douchebag, he's a disgrace.
Anyway, the fight was definitely close enough to warrant a rematch though I doubt that'll ever happen unless Cotto loses to Pacquaio.
