Sounds like a classic, doesn't it? There seems to be a real bitterness behind what he is saying. Like he is envious of the money these guys are making. And a lot of people use jealousy as a way of justifying themselves, and their own opinions. What he is describing takes all of the variables out of boxing. Every fight would be exactly the same, and almost all of them, would be very, very boring. Nash out.

Not bitter, just honest, for the reasons he stated. I'm just a fan, but even I understand what he's saying. The fight was great in terms of drama, tenacity and heart from both guys, but Witherspoon isn't lying that the technique, from both men, was lacking. It was overall sloppy with regard to skills. Not sure why that is really up for debate.

You go out of your way to prove you know less than zero about the sport and/or you've only just started watching it. You go full-ret.ard in 95% of your posts.

Tony Tubbs? Pinklon Thomas? Bonecrusher Smith? Michael Dokes? John Tate? Gerry Coetzee? Tex Cobb? Gerry Cooney? Larry Holmes? How would Fury have faired in the “champions for a day” era?
Not Holmes. LH would have jab upper cut.

Witherspoon was a good boxer back in his day, but he wasn’t very exciting. Sometimes it’s nice to appreciate a good skillful fight sure, but it’s also fun to watch fight like this one, which yeah is like a Rocky type fight…the crowd loves it!

I'm surprised Tim hasn't chimed in on this thread. He popped up on another thread recently.

A two time Heavyweight World Champion who fought 15 rounds. Fought a prime great in Larry Holmes. Beat Frank Bruno in England when Bruno was a monster. To call him a moron etc., that shows where this sport is today. 70-80’s Boxing was pure roadwork, sparring and none of this Instagram garbage. These were real fighters, gyms were real with true teachers. Sparring was with horsehair Shevlin gloves no f’n Winning bar and yeah, no ******* broads in the gym either. (No I’m not PC, I’m old school) you were tough or you went home and the trainers would tell you that to your face. Only winners got a trophy. Period.
The Golden Gloves had non stop knockouts in those times bc the 10-12oz. gloves were padded with dense padding made by Everlast in the Bronx NY. Now amateur gloves are IMF tech pillow padded and you can barely make a fist.

Witherspoon was a skilled boxer puncher and could absorb anything. His loss to Bonecrusher was a night when he had absolutely zero. He had previously beaten him easily. He has every right to criticize the skills of Wilder. No doubting Wilders heart and his Championship reign. Wilder deserves that credit 100 percent. He is possibly the hardest punching Heavyweight Champion of this era and all respect to him.

Boxing is still amazing when great fights happen. But when you grow up in the 1980s Gleasons Gym era with Buddy Mcgirt, Livingstone Bramble, Teddy Atlas, Mitch Green, Simon Brown, Edwin Viruet, Tunde Foster, Doug Dewitt, Iran Barkley, Hector Camacho, Seamus Mcdonough, Chris Reid, James McMahon, Aaron Davis, Glenwood Brown Saoul Mamby, Juan Laporte, Al Gavin, Joe and Nick Baffi, Emile Griffith, Owen McGeachy, Dominick Monaco, Howard Davis jr. and many more.

Old school trainers, cutmen and pure no nonsense boxers. You paid $35.00 a month for a locker and didn’t sign a waiver with your mommy there holding your hand bc you are getting picked on in school. You took the B41 bus from Kings Plaza to Tillary street and WALKED to the gym at 75 Front Street with all factories and the walk up the stairs to the gym was historic. The smell was pure boxing. The atmosphere was pure boxing. The lot of all of them were MEN, pure men, they were pure cutmen, trainers and fighters.. or you went home.
