So, one way for Wilder to get a title shot is because of his name. Another champion fighting Wilder makes a big fight and earns a lot more money. However, assuming no one wants to risk their titles against him, what realistic chances does he have by becoming a mandatory?
WBC: After today, Wilder goes down to probably #3 or 4. Besides, Whyte vs Wallin appears to be the next in line (I object to that but it is what it is). So, Wilder taking this route would have him waiting a lot of time. Currently, the next in line are Ruiz, Joyce, and Ortiz. So, if Wilder fights Ruiz, he can potentially be the next mandatory as I believe Joyce is set for another sanctioning body.
WBA: Have Dubois at the top followed by Hunter, Helenius, Fury (Hughie), and Joshua. Of course, Joshua is fighting Usyk and Dubois might be next in line for the mandatory either directly or after fighting some bum. Warren has set this up for his fighter Dubois.
WBO: Currently, Joyce, Parker, Ruiz, and Sanchez are at the top of the list. Warren has reserved this for Joyce so he is the next mandatory, and this path is booked as well. Joyce fights Parker or some low-level guy in the meantime.
IBO: Here, we have Whyte, vacant, Joyce, and Ruiz. However, they don't really enforce mandatory challengers and their legitimacy is also questionable. Doubt most credible fighters would like to go that way even though IBO is gaining somewhat of an acceptance of late. But the question remains whether or not any champion would want to "defend" that against a "mandatory".
IBF: Current has vacant, Charles Martin, vacant, Hrgovic, Parker, and Yoka. So, if Wilder were to fight Martin, will be automatically become mandatory for the IBF? Ironically, Joshua got the belt from Martin so Wilder could become mandatory by beating Martin.
What other routes does Wilder has IF he wants to be back in the mix and take the long path back to championship glory?
