Are Mental Performance coaches necessary in Boxing in this era??

    Are Mental Performance coaches necessary in Boxing in this era??

    I have been seeing lately psychological support in certain teams.

    I recall something similar to that with AJ in the first fight with AJ, he had something like a motivational coach who was a former military-man.
    Wilder has a mental performance coach for the Fury trilogy and I am sure there are more cases as such out there.

    I understand in the 'yesteryear' of Boxing, fighters didn't really have those types of people in their teams.

    Do you think motivational coaches, mental performance coaches etc. are needed in this era of Boxing for fighters???

    Motivational coaches are quite common in sport although we don't hear much about them. Boxing being a potentially painful sport with often a lot of barriers to overcome throughout a fight would be very suitable for such coaching I think. Depends on the individual of course but the eye test indicates that some boxers need motivating.

      Honestly, this would depend on the fighter. Some might like having a "motivational coach" or whatchamacallit, some could use the support of a certified professional psychologist (especially with boxing, as it's a combat sport, so it requires dealing with fear. Heck, some historically great-but-insane fighters could have used the help of one, and I bet all of us could name at least 5 or 6 different guys, lol. Not all coaches will be able to handle all of what's in the heads of these guys on their own). Some might find their presence a nuisance.

      Although I'm not really buying into the entire "mental performance" bullcrap business; I consider it a bit of a scam (but I'm a psychoanalyst, so of course I would). Hell, say, Wilder's narcissistic enough on his very own, he really does not require a cheerleader (though he might enjoy having a pre-paid one), and AJ's been a walking-talking motivational poster for quite some time now. He used to be more mean and intimidating before that, but I guess to each his own.

      It's a bit of a fad I think. Whatever helps, I guess.

        What you think and how you frame everything is super important in life, the right advice taken onboard can dramatically change everything for a guy, get the right frame of mind and you can overcome anything, to perform at your best under the spotlight requires the right mindset, its at least as important as going to the gym.

          Some times a guys mind is not right and will need to be reset. A calm mind is a fighters best friend.

              Nice breakdown man.
              Yeah I think some can use those types of coaches.
              I reckon a great majority of Boxers don't have them or need them.

                Right I feel you on that.
                But I kind of think Mental Performance coach falls into a similar category of them other type coaches.
                The thing here is just for the fact that you are a pro fighter should mainly mean you have super strong mental and emotional control, if not then the athlete should reconsider even being in the fight business.
                Fighters should have realized the former since their amateur careers.

                  if u are trying to do something and u are focused and refreshed and in a good frame of mind its just so much easier than if u are not, u also sleep better overall which is vital for performance i would say

                  now whether the coach actually achieves this is another matter, if something is stressing u out sometimes dealing with it is too much effort and maybe impossible, try something that has proven worked over evolution, get rid of it, out of sight out of mind, it works pretty good

                    They have been around since forever, the only thing though before they used to be called coaches / trainers. Unfortunately not a lot are left that are capable of doing what Dundee did with Leonard and Ali or D'Amato with Tyson. Apart from nowadays there is also the stress that social media puts on the athletes (every type of sport).
