  • Can we stop pretending previous generation heavyweights are too small? Usyk and Joe Louis are the same size

The lineal heavyweight champions from all previous eras would destroy every fighter in this era.

Dont tell me they’re too small. They clearly aren’t.

No, he just made it clear that the blanket statement of: “this generations heavyweights are just too big” is a ridiculous statement.

Louis was 6'1 ... Usyk is 6'3 with a 24 hour weigh in advantage. You prove your stupidity once more.

the 'size matters' term maybe could be changed to size matters (just not as much as some thought)'?

True, I remember Earl Hickey made some thread about how today's heavyweights are massive titans who would destroy all the past legends.

Scary to think of what prime Louis and Ali would do to today's fighters. They wouldn't even see half of the punches coming.

Louis was 6-2. Usyk is 6-3.

Louis had a 76 inch reach. Usyk has a 78 inch reach.

Joe Louis’ highest weight was 218. Usyk was 220 last night. That’s the first time Usyk ever weighed more than Louis’ highest weight.

Louis also weighed more than 200 pounds for almost all of his 69 fights. Usyk has weighed more than 200 pounds three times.

1 inch in height, 2 inches in reach.

              Nice try though.

Look at Tyson. Remember what everyone would say about Tyson? "I don't see Tyson overcoming the 10 inch reach advantage." "When Tyson comes in, because he has to, he's going to get caught with the uppercut." "He's too big for Tyson."

There was Joe Frasier who was as tall as Tyson, and he did pretty well in the land of giants. There was Marciano who was shorter than Tyson and shorter than everyone else at heavyweight at the time.

Holyfield was small too, and although I have a lot of respect for Holyfield, that guy was hitting them roids. You don't get traps like that without a little help. That's probably why he took a punch better than anyone and lost all his hair overnight.

The only thing about Usyk that is a drawback is just like Roy said, he lacks that explosive, concussive power. His boxing skills and IQ make up for that, but he's going to have to go the distance with a lot of guys.

Yeah, that whole thread was a bad take. I there were several NSB posters who agreed with that silliness. I don't think the majority of them followed previous eras of boxing.

I feel like I've seen posters say this every week for the past 3 years. They won't admit they're wrong but instead double down, giving Usyk an inch in height and 20 pounds. Or shift the argument ever slightly.
