Anthony Joshua's biggest problems and the way forward

Everyone can't be a yes-man and sometimes someone has to say the bitter truth. Especially amongst his loyal fans who have been supporting him from his amateur days.

    1. You can't be taking all the risky fights in the division and difficult styles as a professional boxer whilst being stuck in an amateur setting in Sheffield. Team GB boxing institute in Sheffield isn't known for producing great amateur talents to begin with and none of his trainers have been at this level with great boxers - why stay there? Loyalty shouldn't overshadow common sense. I know he feels comfortable there but you're in the hurt business and comfort is the last thing you need when preparing to get in the ring with elite boxers. I'm not a Fury fan (will never be) but one thing about him is that he knows his limitations and he wouldn't mind changing his trainers if need be.

    2. I don't think AJ has found himself and he knows who he's. I'm colour blind but a classic example is how one minute he wants to be pro-black (which infuriates a section of the white demographic) - the next minute he's mostly surrounded by white people whilst enriching them in the process and that also infuriates a section of the black population. One minute he thinks he's Al Pacino trying to follow street codes and the next minute he's a clean cut guy in a business suit. At 32, you ought to know who you're and that's also evident in the way he boxes sometimes due to overthinking things and being confused in realtime.

    3. He screams loyalty but apart from Rob, none of these guys he acts loyal to give a monkey about him. Hearn would sell his mum for a quick quid and I've always said he doesn't care about AJ. Arum and Al would've put in a fix yesterday for the judges to call that fight a draw (we've seen worse robberies in boxing) with what's at stake. But in true Teflon Hearn fashion yesterday - I'm sure all he was thinking about is a rematch. He also said snide things about AJ yesterday after the fight that a promoter shouldn't say(he did the same thing after the 1st Ruiz fight). Yet this guy announced that he signed a life contract with the same guy. I don't know the content of the contract but the connotation about "life contract" alone is troubling and it's not a good omen for young/aspiring boxers. Only ****** sign life contracts.

The likes of Steve Bunce and Adam Smith have never liked him and they're both loyal Fury fans...but this guy talks about loyalty. Loyalty is a 2-way street and you always have to cater to yourself first.

    4. Boxing is about 60% mental and you have to be mentally dedicated to be an all time great. It's not just about sharpening your physical tools - your warrior mindset has to be switched on at all times. All the laughing and nice guy posturing don't help against a guy trying to take off your head. If he's ever going to be an ATG - he needs the fire and mean streak that got him this far again. The nonsense he started pre-Ruiz fight has to go. Boxing isn't a gentleman's sport - it's a gladiator sport.

    ================================================== =

    Way forward:

    1. Leave the UK and move to the US to train with an experienced American trainer. He has great attributes - he just needs a change of environment and someone who can make him a finished article. Lennox did the same thing and he became better for it. Rob, Joby and Angel are amateur coaches. Buddy McGirt would do a great job with AJ.

    2. Time for him to find himself and stop being confused in and out of the ring. Take a stance and stay there.

    3. Fffck loyalty - you have to put yourself first, no one gives a fffck about you, they only care about what they benefit from your presence.

    4. Nice guys always finish last in a gladiator sport.

If he can't make these changes - it's time for him to retire. He's already a HoFer and people who achieved less got in. And he has definitely made shiiitload of money. As for me, I won't stop being a superfan and I still believe he beats Fury and Wilder.

Talking about Hearn: a guy who doesn't take punches in head just used AJ to build an empire. Match making from the beginning of his career until now has been terrible and it has solely been about moneygrab without letting him develop properly. The Wlad fight was way too and that took a lot out of him. And the Ruiz late replacement was terrible match making and that ruined him further with everything that happened leading up to the fight. He should have fought Trevor Bryan.

This is basically why I've never liked Hearn. All he cares about is money.

****em, you and i dont always agree. But yes he needs to leave the UK and train in the US. He needs a trainer who will guide him and teacher him either to be a fighter like Lennox was and had when he was trained by emanuel Steward or He nneds a guy like Derrick James. Joshua is an athlete but he needs to be exposed to different styles and to people who arent yes men.

          He’s just not very good.

he’s been fortunate to hold 3 belts. One he won from Martin, a guy who won a title by leg injury. one he won in a vacant fight v Wlad coming off a loss and one from Parker, who we all know by now is not that good.

Then he lost the belts once to a guy who just went life and death with a 40-year-old Arreola.

Then mostly defences v 40 year olds.

His resume is smoke and mirrors, Great matchmaking and buying title opportunities because he had a big commercial profile.

Fury won titles from long reigning champs. It’s something I **** on about but there’s a reason why. There’s a big difference between dethroning long reigning champions and essentially buying titles.

Eventually you keep getting found out if you’re not elite and AJ isn’t. He’s well into his 30’s now. He’s not going to get much better.

The gameplan was ******, he didn't use his size/strength advantage and tried to outbox Usyk in the centre of the ring. He's got another shot and a win in a rematch will actually look better in the long run than if he blew Usyk out in the first fight. Usyk is now a top 2 HW and Joshua will be 3x HW champ if he wins.

Let's go back on everything said pre fight and blame Robert crackhead the guy who took froch and Joshua both late starters into elite stardom...

The training isn't the problem it's simple limitations,Joshua has gone above and beyond what any late starter can do in such a dangerous division...

Let's just give usyk his well deserved cong****..nobody thought he could do what he did as good as he did ...

Joshua is a monster and usyk is simply an atg he still had to overcome a lot last night...that monster right hand counter he took from Joshua and several devastating body shots..usyk was hurt several times he's just cut from old cloth

True. It's difficult to be sane in a forum like this one that's mostly populated by mad people.

Anyway, I don't know much about Derrick James but he does need to leave the UK and a change of environment. You can't fight as this level training in an amateur setting and with amateur coaches. Even in Sheffield, his pictures are everywhere and he's hero there. So how are you going to have the hunger when your training camp is littered with images of you celebrating your greatness?

He also has too many yes men around him - time to cut people loose and lock yourself in a place where you can get your mind right and find the fire again.

He didn't even box badly yesterday - he just gave away the first 3 rds and that was the deciding factor. The fight was even from rds 4-12.

The lack of hunger and feeling like a celebrity whilst taking selfies did him in.

                  And that's Rob's fault.

You can't go into that type of fight especially when the judges are going to be neutral by giving away the first 3 rds. You have to set the tone as the bigger guy.

After the first 3rds - the fight was even. Winning the last rd would've helped his cause but he was gassed.

Rob was so clueless that even when Josh was having success in the mid rds by going to the body - he kept saying fight behind the jab. SMH

He hooked with a hooker against Ruiz and boxed with a boxer against Usyk. That's just terrible coaching.

He definitely can win the rematch but he needs a lot of changes starting with his mindset, trainer and perhaps environment.

The fight was even ? Such tunnel vision ..can you not accept things the way they are? Joshua's not bad he's an excellent fighter.Usyk is simply up leagues better..to tame such a dangerous fighter the way he did he has earned significant props

Usyks chin for being such a remarkably smaller man..the way he took Joshua's best shots and instantly returned more to keep the monster at bay...

It's been a long time since I witnessed something so remarkable in boxing and I am so grateful

What a definitive win for usyk
