Comments Thread For: Bob Arum: What Better Fight Is There For Terence Crawford Other Than Shawn Porter?

Problem is, Crawford won't dismantle Shawn Porter. Spence couldn't dismantle Shawn Porter and Spence has been in way tougher fights than Crawford - and he STILL couldn't get more than 7 rounds off Shawn Porter. Nobody has, nobody will. Ugas came close, and I argue Ugas should have got the win, but it was RAZOR close.
Meanwhile, Crawford in his last fight got his eye closed off a jab from a guy barely trying and just prior this happened to him from a severe underdog:

Which has never happened to Spence.
So...the best we can expect is that Crawford eeks out a razor close win. A win's a win.
I said it before though. He won't get full credit - from the media OR me - unless he does one of the following three, which are only in play because NSB says he's #1 P4P, so this is what I expect from a #1 P4P (because Canelo, the real P4P king, has done at least one of these against all but two of his recent opponents):- Clean, clear knockout - Porter on his back, Porter taking a knee, etc
- Clean, clear stoppage - Porter on ***** street, Kenny Porter tossing a towel, Porter a bloody mess NOT from a headbutt, etc.
- Blowout - at least 9 clear rounds
I'm so confident he won't do any of the three above that I have a bet out there, nobody wants the smoke.Comment

How about a bet for a good old fashion win?.... I agree with a lot of what you are saying but instead of him having to win 9 rounds clear how about if he beats PORTER more convincingly than both Spence and THURMAN DID? That should count for something when judging his skillset

Betting on wins is ****** because as you know, they'll just orchestrate a draw.

"more convincingly" is too subjective. If he only gets 7 rounds off Porter he's done no better than Spence. 8 rounds, he's done no better than prime, but untested, Kell Brook.
He has to do something that NO other fighter has ever done to him. That's what P4P fighters do.
Nobody had beaten, much less injured, Saunders. Canelo did it.
Nobody had dominated Callum Smith. Canelo did it.
Nobody had dominated a champion (Kovalev) while still campaigning at a lower weight. Canelo did that.
Canelo fought THREE times and dominated THREE champions in the span of time between Crawford's fights.
So no, it's not just about winning for him.
If this guy is a P4P fighter, he needs to prove that by doing something that P4P fighters do.Comment

Kovalev was not the same fighter he once was when fighting Canelo. He was hit by Canelo's first meaningful shot and that was it. I actually rate the Callum smith and Billie joe Saunders Victories more. However I'm not questioning Canelo he deserves it and even if Crawford knocks out Porter Canelo still supersedes Crawford.

THURMAN and SPENCE where P4P fighters and they barely squeezed past Porter why does Crawford have to win 9 rounds in your lofty expectations?Comment

Nobody - NOBODY - on NSB has ever called either guy the #1 P4P or even #3 P4P.

#1 Welterweight? Yes, but that's not the same thing.
I am specifically calling out the #1 P4P claim from NSB and the media. Ok, then you prove it by doing what TRUE #1 P4P guys do, or stop calling him #1 P4P until he does prove it.Comment

Oh no I simply meant spence and Thurman were on the P4P list. Spence on some list was as low as 5 and Thurman was 8/9 or not on there . Crawford was always on my list but never 1or 2. He just hasnt fought credible enough names to be high on my list but that changes if he knocks out PORTER. however , even then he is 2or 3 on my list

I'm pretty impressed Arum was able to get this fight for Crawford. I feel like it diminishes the need for Crawford to go to PBC now. Pacquiao lost and retired, Thurman lost and is semi-retired having fought only twice in almost 5 years, and Danny Garcia is irrelevant having lost every meaningful WW fight for him.
PBC's main WWs are Spence, Porter, and Ugas now. Spence has had two horrible injuries in a short period of time, Crawford is getting Porter with Top Rank, and Ugas doesn't do much to move the needle. I still think the Spence-Ugas winner vs. Crawford is a huge fight, but there's no longer 5 PBC WWs for Crawford to fight.
The most interesting fights at WW after Porter are Ortiz Jr. and Ennis now IMO. Outside of the Spence-Ugas winner.Comment

That's all I'm saying!

- blowout - over 9 clear rounds
So someone who can, must be a top quality fighter.
But right now?
I don't see "top quality" out of him. Especially not getting his eye closed by the ghost of Kell Brook that was barely trying.
I sure hope he can prove me wrong, but I'm not holding out. Porter has shown me he's up there with the top guys, he's been in wars every time and nobody comes out the same.
Crawford hasn't been tested at 147. That's all I've ever said. This is his FIRST test. He has to impress on his FIRST test. That means no razor close win will convince me he's anything other than a decently good fighter.
And if Porter drops that man, he's glass exposed in my eyes, because Porter doesn't drop any damn body.Last edited by Combat Talk Radio; 09-24-2021, 09:23 AM.Comment
