Here is a funny thing. When I grew up being American was still seen as the coolest thing possible. It wasn't just Ali, although he was obviously a huge presence in our lives, it was also Hollywood, Michael Jackson, New York Times Square. I remember spending 3 months in DC & being just 'blown away' by how wonderful it all seemed. I think we were still partly in thrall to America's golden era, the 50s, to Sinatra, Martin, Davis to Robinson & Marciano, to Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran & Chuck Berry, to, of course, Marilyn Monroe.
I think, if you had said to me then that Europeans would laugh contemptuously at Americans I would have said you were mad. Everyone in Europe loved & admired the USA & most young people wished they could go there.

Don't get me wrong. I totally appreciate that many Americans, especially **********s, have utter contempt for Europeans & couldn't care less how they are thought of. I just find it really odd that in about 40 years the relationship has so utterly changed.

But maybe I'm just an old fool.
