Comments Thread For: Zapata Was Aware of Dangerous Risks in Boxing, According To Father

Jeanette Zacarias Zapata, the 18-year-old female Mexican boxer who died of traumatic brain injuries last week after participating on a fight card in Montreal, was ready to face any fatal outcomes inside the ring and, what's more, was apparently warned by doctors after her previous knockout loss in May that she would need surgery, according to her father.

So her and her family were aware that doctors advised surgery for her and yet she went back into the ring? I don't know enough of her personal or economic situation to pass judgement on her decision but it's incredibly sad that she stepped back into the ring and nobody interceded on behalf of the 18 year old girl.

Its sad across the board. 6 month mandatory suspensions for all fighters coming off knock out loses should be put into law

"However, Proceso also notes that Zapata, after getting knocked out by Lozano, was informed by doctors that surgery on her brain would be required. "

And instead she fought three months later? Speechless. What a tragedy.

It's sad that her husband and family allowed her to fight again this year, let alone after getting the news that her brain needed some medical attention.

Spence caught a lot of flack about his eye and having to pull out of the Pacquiao fight, but long-term health should always be considered...especially when it's caught before the first bell.

Prime example of boxers taking risks because they don’t make enough in the lower ranks. There was no reason to take this fight other than money. It’s tragic because these lower ranked fingers and female fighters are paid so poorly they need to turn around fights so quickly which is fine so long as you aren’t taking tons of damage per fight. Folks sit up here and talk about how boxing has become a business and talk out of their behinds about who priced themselves out. This is why they do, they deserved what they believe their talents are worth because obviously the cost on the other end is one we usually don’t see or bullshhhh fake ass fans don’t care about.

How was the doctor informing her she would need brain surgery not in the medical reports Montreal reviewed?

well I guess her family gave her a choice....box or be sold into sex slavery. a disgrace an 18 year old girl is dead and women should not be allowed to box. I know men get killed in the ring but they are men and men have always bore the brunt of death in war and the workplace
