No Canelo did not sign a 3 fight deal with Hearn. They were 3 individual and separate contracts. That is a big difference that entails more risk and possibly a bigger reward for Canelo. I can't, nor did I say, I fault PBC for not accepting the same financial liability if Caleb could not fight and they had to come up with a substitute. Without having access to the written proposed contracts of all parties, no one can second guess the decisions of any of those involved. In my view, It makes little sense to offer Canelo $40 million for one fight, but it does make good sense to offer him 40 million for the first of a 3 or 4 fight deal. The big loser here is neither Canelo nor Haymon. Canelo will make buckets of money regardless of who he fights. Also not losing money are all Canelo haters who make a good living posting videos on YouTube slamming him. Hating Canelo is a lucrative cottage industry. The loser here is Caleb Plant who will likely lose his title in short order, and for a lot less money, to either Charlo or Benavidez.

Plant says he wants to rematch Uzcategui or Feigenbutz.

you’re comparing a long term multi year contract agreement where there’s guaranteed purses for a fighter that is fighting exclusively with that platform, to canelo demanding a guarantee for a single fight during a pandemic. Not the same thing and nobody has ever made such a demand. Just end it and say that no matter what Canelo does, you’ll be cool with it cause you love and adore him. Dazn no longer wanted to guarantee Canelo 35 mil for fighting with them but he wants pbc to guarantee him 40 even if Plant gets injured or sick? Looks like all this time you Canelo groupies were accusing Plant of pricing himself out of the fight but it was actually canelo who priced himself out. Now keep that same energy for insulting the guy who held the fight up.

Huh, kind of a shame because it almost seems to me like this rivalry needs a third, conclusive fight. I was starting to think it was going to be Bivol, but based on the quote from Eddie, it does sound like they are going to try and still do the Plant fight later in the year.

Boxing never plays out like we want it to, on the time schedule we're initially told to expect lol. Never.

It's because this is how they sell you crap matchups. A few months of public negotations, drama, "the fight is dead, no it isn't," 1,000 headlines. Do you really think every big fight negotiation is a huge soap opera in reality? Of course not. But they play it out that way to pit fans against each other, get everyone to take sides, get everyone invested, and sell you fights that otherwise you would never have any interest in.

With Loma-Teofimo 2, you got the covid delay soap opera, Triller purse bid soap opera, etc etc. With Wilder-Fury, you got the gloves soap opera, covid delay soap opera, heavy costume soap opera, etc. With Herring-Stevenson, they just started the "why is the champ getting paid less than the challenger?" soap opera. With Canelo-BJS, they had the ring size soap opera and probably a bunch others I'm forgetting.

They change up the story lines every time, but it's the same bs played over and over, for the same reasons. The moment you believe a word of any of it, that's how they hook you in. "That's so unfair that Herring is the champ but he's getting paid less in a purse bid! Stevenson is being shown favoritism! That's unjust! I hope Herring beats him!" And now you're going to watch to find out, a matchup that is otherwise a C-grade matchup you would never be interested in.

And that's how the game is played... Fury, Wilder, Hearn, Arum and Finkel know what they're doing. They are all cast members on the same soap opera, figuratively speaking. They are co-workers. They all benefit from playing their roles in the storylines. Same with Canelo and Plant, Teofimo and Loma, etc etc etc. Be careful what you fall for.

PBC Balked At Paying Canelo $40M For Replacement Opponent On Sept.18 If Plant Unable To Fight

Canelo Alvarez is stuck without an opponent for his September 18th fight after his negotiations with IBF super 168-lb champion Caleb Plant fizzled over the $40 million guarantee the Mexican star wanted in case ‘Sweethands’ pulled out of the fight due to injury/illness.

Mike Coppinger reporting that Premier Boxing Champions [PBC] wouldn’t agree to the $40M guarantee that Canelo wanted, which involved him getting that amount even if Plant (21-0, 12 KOs) pulled out of the fight due to injury or illness.

It’s understandable why PBC wouldn’t agree to pay Canelo $40 million if he winds up facing a replacement. However, from Canelo’s standpoint, he wasn’t going to take the chance of Plant needing to pull out of the fight due to injury.

The $40 million that Canelo was still insisting on getting in the event of a replacement opponent was clearly a way for him to make sure that he would get top dollar if Plant couldn’t fight. It makes sense for Canelo.

I guess you could call it insurance for Canelo. If he ends up fighting a PBC replacement opponent, he will get the same $40M.

Plant obviously didn’t like the sound of Canelo’s request, but the Mexican star didn’t want to take any chances.

With Plant’s hand injury problems, there’s no telling whether he could make it through training camp without needing to postpone. If Plant pulled out of the fight, Canelo would be stuck needing to fight a replacement. Would that replacement come from PBC? If so, Canelo would essentially be fighting a two-fight deal because he would still wind up facing Plant later.

If Canelo’s fight is on PBC against one of their fighters like David Benavidez, for example, he would still need to face Plant later for him to capture his belt. So instead of it being one fight, Canelo would potentially be fighting twice on PBC.

It would be a great deal for PBC because they get Canelo for two fights instead of the original one, and who knows how much his payday would be for the replacement. It’s unlikely that Canelo would have gotten anywhere near the $40 million that he’d negotiated for the Plant fight.

The loser in all this is Plant, who would have gotten a career-high payday of $10 million. Even if Plant lost the fight, his value would have increased as long as he put in a good showing.

It will hurt Plant to lose out on that payday, especially if Canelo never attempts to revisit the fight. With Canelo, he might choose to ignore Plant after this episode and move on with his career. Indeed, it would be surprising if Canelo chooses to set up a fight with Plant again.

Plant will eventually lose his title once the International Boxing Federation orders him to defend against David Benavidez or if he faces Jermall Charlo. Those are Plant’s best chances for a big payday, but he won’t get the same kind of money fighting them as he would have against Canelo.
