I have seen Top Rank budge just a few times in the last decade, the fight has to be very big like Mayweather vs Pacquiao, or Wilder vs Fury. If it is a fight that is generating a lot of interest from fans, media and networks, he will do it. Nobody really cared about Crawford vs Matthysse. It was not a fight on demand. Fans asked for Crawford vs Postol and that got made. That was really the last fight Crawford had that fans wanted to see him in. His resume is piss poor now, he wasted his prime fighting mediocre opponents.
Dela Hoya and Arum were on a lovey dovey relationship during that time (when GBP's fighters were taken over by Schaefer/Haymon and moved to Showtime.) They had to work together because HBO didn't have any fighters left. Haymon took most of them.
Provodnikov and Postol's management team was affiliated with Arum. Thus, the Provo vs Bradley fight. Then the Matthysse vs Provo fight 2 yrs later, a joint GBP/TR promotion. Vargas vs Sadam Ali was also made on the same year, albeit a mandatory fight. So then Vargas won a belt from Ali. Again, Bob didn't attempt to make the Vargas vs Crawford fight an IN-HOUSE fight.
"...Nelson doesn't have that vision and I'm not gonna let him screw up our prospects by taking away from us what is our great strength and that's the ability to match-make. And if that means frequently not on HBO, that's too bad we'll find a way."
"Nelson has some ideas of who Crawford should fight and if he persists in his ideas and HBO continues to back him, then we'll take Crawford elsewhere. In other words, we are a company that prides ourselves in putting on fights and match-making and we're not gonna let somebody else come in and do what we do best. Now, HBO is paying us money that fights on HBO, so they have the right and obligation to reject any fight that we give them, but they're not gonna match-make for me."Last edited by maguirre; 07-31-2021, 04:32 AM.

People felt like Matthysse was a monster than. It was really a shock when he was outboxed by Garcia and stopped by Postol.

Dummies on here genuinely believed he'd brutalize Garcia easily and then beat Floyd after.Last edited by Szef; 07-31-2021, 01:17 PM.
