Top Rank is ESPN/ESPN+ (or the occasional PPV), Queensbury cards are occasionally on the ESPN+ streaming app.

If I had to pay $20-30 for Whyte/Chisora (both of which were entertaining) type cards I don't think my viewpoint would be quite the same. I'm not a fan of the PPV, but I get that sometimes it's needed to make certain fights happen...it shouldn't be used to gouge the fans for an extra dollar (or pound).
Completely agree mate. I have no problem splashing out for the big fights. I’ve spent ****** money travelling around the world watching boxing. But I’m just not prepared to be ripped off paying for lower level fighters like Dereck Chisora or Dillian Whyte. Carl Froch who consistently fought in world title fights only ever had 3 PPV fights on Sky, Dillian Whyte who’s never even won a European title has now had 7 PPV fights. They’re just taking the p*** now IMO, and worst of all the money they generate via these PPV’s is never invested back into the product. I always remember after Mayweather-Pacquiao, HBO gave its subscribers Canelo on non-PPV the very same month, Sky never ever do anything like that for the subscribers, it’s just take, take, take and the product continually declined year upon year.

Boxing coverage in this country is poor all round these days. Taylor-Ramirez, Charlo-Castano, Loma-Lopez, Tank-LSC, Spence-Garcia, Crawford-Brook are part of a long list of fights Sky, BT or any other major network refused to pick up in the past 12 months. Thank god for streams tbh.

They’re usually around the same level. Warren is a good matchmaker when matching guys domestically but far too many of his fighters get sent down the WBO route fighting nobodies for WBO European or Intercontinental titles. Anthony Yarde is a prime example in recent years.

One thing I will give Warren though is he doesn’t have the biggest of budgets. My biggest issue with Matchroom is I feel they could invest a hell of a lot more into the product. They make us pay for sh*** like Whyte and Chisora headlining PPV’s yet never give the fans anything back in return. They just keep taking from the fanbase, bleeding it dry. At least Warren occasionally gives us fights Joyce-Dubois as at no extra cost as a non-PPV show.
Matchroom SHOULD be the best promotion on the planet. They literally have all the advantages with the most money behind them or seemingly so. If Hearn would just be more diplomatic he actually WOULD take over global boxing or at least bring it all together. I cant help but imagine what could have been if he had come to the USA looking to consolidate boxing into one major network of promoters working together rather than putting others out of business. He targeted haymon, but wanted to work with DLH and arum. He and Haymon worked together in the early days of pbc when all the British fighters came to the USA for fights. He really soured that. It’s not too late, but I’m not sure he can adjust fire and do the right thing for the sport

Whatever happened to that deal that PBC had with showing it’s cards in the U.K.?

It just kind of fizzled out. I think it was just ITV wanting a slice of the PPV market tbh. Think the last card they put on was Eubank Jr-DeGale on PPV.

It started out well, we were getting the PBC cards on terrestrial TV with the odd PPV fight like Pacquiao-Thurman but then ITV just stopped picking up the fights.

I always felt he’d struggle in the US. A lot of his success is because of Sky. Sky absolutely dominate the TV sector in this country and further dominate the sports sector. So with their massive multimedia influence Hearn is able serve up underwhelming cards and polish them off as a premium product. Not sure if you’ve ever seen a Sky Sport News report on a Matchroom card back when they were exclusive partners but it was genuinely like Soviet propaganda. You have supposed “boxing experts” like Johnny Nelson saying Conor Benn beats Shawn Porter and Kell Brook will “KO GGG early” and the casuals eat it up. That’s why a lot of British/Matchroom fans are so deluded on here.

Hearn doesn’t have that same platform with DAZN and the competitive nature of American television makes it far more difficult to persuade the casual audience that your cards are actually worth watching.

I suppose it’s too early to tell if the British sports loving fan will migrate to the app but I suspect it will do better there than here due to sports like snooker and darts being covered that is if sky doesn’t control those. Last time I watched sky concerning boxing was the last time I was in the U.K. in September to November 2018 on business and seeing family in the NW. this was around the time where boxing suddenly exploded with every major promotion getting a piece of the American pie. Things have certainly calmed down since then on all fronts

Sky control darts, can’t see that leaving Sky anytime soon. Snooker’s bigger events are BBC but the smaller tournaments are on Eurosport.

It’s all about the football over here tbh, that’s what drives subscriptions. If DAZN can manage to wrestle some of the EPL or UCL rights from Sky and BT they’ll have a good chance of succeeding, aside from the hardcore boxing fans you won’t have many signing up for boxing alone. For example, the only people I know who have DAZN are keen boxing fans themselves. Even though I’m no fan of Hearn, I’d like to see DAZN succeed in the UK, the more boxing on TV the better for me.
