Comments Thread For: Gervonta Davis, The Favored 'A' Side, Is In A No-Win Situation Against Mario Barrios

By Keith Idec - ATLANTA - The favored 'A' side of this pay-per-view show will find himself in a no-win situation Saturday night. If Gervonta Davis knocks out Mario Barrios, Davis' detractors will dismiss Barrios as a paper champion cherrypicked by Davis because the undefeated knockout artist didn't want to fight his legitimate threats in the lightweight division. But if Barrios beats him, the masterful matchmaking that has helped build Davis into a pay-per-view attraction and one of the few

I was just thinking a few days ago (reminiscing really) if BoxingScene had good enough (neutral) writers to write an article on Davis, and this fight. Cliff Rold and Keith Idec deliver. Good job, guys.

This is no fucking easy fight. Davis will show the whole class why he's the best fighter in boxing. Canelo is a big fan too. This is what a lot of the fighters think: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JV15Q-5c7ZI

WBA really has no shame. They know that the boxing world knows about their WBA regular/super title corruption and they don’t bother removing it. They do it for only one reason obviously, more sanctioning fees. They are blatant too, it’s not even something they hide. When a business man is fcking over their clients/customers, the businessman usually attempts to hide the fckening. Taylor is the clear champion of 140. WBA needs to gtfoh with their BS.

As for Tank vs Barrios, i’m not sure about all this “weak opponent” stuff. I’ve seen some footage of Barrios and he is a definitely live dog. His physical advantages are also hard to ignore. If he can take a good punch and is willing to come forward and pressure Davis, we may see an upset. The predictions of this fight reminds me of Cotto-Margarito I. The majority thought Cotto would win, the odds favored Cotto, posters mostly favored Cotto. But to me I really didn’t see how Cotto will win.

So while, yes I favor Tank to edge out Barrios, I don’t see why some people are writing off Barrios. He has good punch selection, doesn’t throw them wildly, has really good hand speed and he is pretty good at countering. My officially is Tank. But that’s only if Tank is taking this guy real serious. This is not a fight he should be taking lightly. Fans want to call him a cherrypick for Tank but I fail to see how this is supposed to be an easy fight for Davis.

I predict we see 12 rounds and Barrios will be a very game opponent.

It’s very possible that fans who say that probably have never seen Barrios fight. Or maybe they’re just saying he sucks, knowing he stands a chance on pulling off the upset, just to say Tank is trash if it’s a competitive fight or a loss for Davis. I noticed over the last 15 years posting here, that many fans don’t even know what a bad or cherrypicked opponent really is.

Sh/t to be honest i’m starting to lean more to the “Tank is biting off more than he could chew” side.

What do I expect in this fight? I like Barrios a lot and have followed his career for a while. Great guy. Good fighter. I'm expecting Gervonta to trounce him and hurt him Saturday.

It depends on Barrios how it goes. If he brings the fire early, then 4 rounds. If he plays nice, maybe a slow beating for 8 rounds. Davis likes to fight big guys. That's my prediction anyway.

Barrios is a big kid, tough and he's got a good engine, much to like about him, but stylistically he's pretty basic. I'd say Kudos to Tank for stepping up 2 divisions (or one depending how you see it) and fighting a kinda semi-legit dude... it ain't Tank's fault they gave the nod to Mario over Akhmedov or that Mario never gave Batyr his rematch. Solid enough fight and a decisive win - especially by KO - would certainly show Gervonta's a threat to anyone in the division.

The article suggests his intent is to move back down to 135 however which is probably the smarter move cos I think Tank might be a little undersized at 140, only problem he'll have of course is that most of the talent at 135 ain't on his side of the street. I guess it's a dilemma faced by a number of top fighters.

Incidentally looking forward to seeing Batyr back in action tomorrow too although I'd expect him to outclass Mendis at this stage in the Dominican's career.

His base will be 135. Barrios fight for two reasons: solidify the weight as a 135 pounder, good to take on bigger guys, be a strong 135, and honestly, to beat your boy's ass (Taylor).
