Replace boxing with football for a second, and this falls apart totally. You root for people because you believe in them, simple

Or let's say Wilder was your soon you will "root" for him & support him, even though you know fury is way better.......this is how humans are wired, any deviation is considered abnormal
Completely different sport. Football teams represent cities and the regional area around them and the majority of people grow up rooting for a certain team because their family members root for them. The players change but the team is a constant. A person can root for a football team for a lifetime. A boxer will come in and go in ten years and they represent themselves for the most part .

I like Errol Spence alot, I think he is a great fighter. He grew up 2 hours from where I live. Thats cool but thats not why I like him. I like watching the Charlo brothers, its not because they are from Houston. They entertain me, thats why the majority of people that I have met like boxers. A football team represents in a lot of cases years of family tradition that the children get introduced to at an early age. Boxers arent around long enough to build that kind of following.

America is ****ing huge. I know some cats who are cheering for Fury just cause he trains outta Detroit. The distance between Detroit to Houston is 1500 miles. That's a bigger distance than London, England to Warsaw, Poland. Nobody in Detroit can relate to a Texas cat. That's just how it is.

EDIT - The distance is about the same as London, England to Kiev, Ukraine. there's like six countries between them

Fury will beat him again because Wilder is a one trick pony and Fury is light years ahead of him when it comes to boxing ability. Also bringing in the man who took a dive for him will not help, just another yes man in the group.
Could be you are right. It will be interesting to see though if Wilder brings more to the fight this time. He has to fight like it means his future because it probably does.

          • a lot of fans will support a guy from their country or especially the area they grew up unless there are good reasons not too i think, they are an a hole for example but good boxing fans will also support and like good fighters from other countries that they like but probably not as much as 'their guys', other fans only support home country fighters etc, its a huge mixed bag plus online trolls of which there are many, can sway some fans to almost hate fighters from certain areas with their trolling

plus, small countries are different than large i think, you can get lost with so many sports, players, boxers etc in america for example, its large and there are so many, nationalities etc, u literally cant support them all!! its not possible, smaller countries are like local areas in a large country, its more compact and different

True...... can't argue with this, I was just making the point that other factors can rank above skillset when it comes to who we root for

              • Style first

Next is if they're American or not.

I'm not a fan of sluggers

                • I'd root for a Slique Eskimo Technician over an American brawler

I had feeling you'd bring up the obvious difference between the sports, but my point was you root for your team even when they don't stand a chance, even when their skill set is sub-par, infact we see the team as a whole and most times we are oblivious to the parts, so players will come and go, and they'd bring along their different vibes and characters & it still won't matter...

I understand that a particular fighter won't be around for a life time, the individuals that make a team also come and go, but what they represent stays, fighters represent their respective countries and when one fighter leaves, other fighters pick that mantle

Fury vs Wilder is national event......it's the UK vs the USA & guess what, the UK fans see it that way, why are American fans divided on this.

My original point still stays....some factors rank above skillset when deciding on who to root for
