Pacquiao is old, past prime and ready to retire. There could various reasons why he chose to fight Spence of all people.
1. Haymon offered him more money to fight Spence than anyone else was offering him to fight anyone. i.e. Arum’s offer to Pacquiao for Crawford. Arum probably lowballed Pacquiao, or Crawford wanted too much of the pie without being a PPV attraction.
2. Out of all the popular names in boxing, Errol Spence is the only one around Pacquiao’s weight class with a decent PPV track record. Averaging 350k from his 3 PPV’s. Team Pacquiao probably sees him as the best dance partner around 140-154.
3. Pacquiao is old and maybe he needs a top 10 P4P, young, prime fighter who will be favored to beat him, in order to keep him serious in the gym. If he takes on another Jeff Horn type, he might take him lightly, overlook him, and lose a close points decision. Maybe he just wants to fight the best because if he wins, he ends his legacy on a very high note. And the best is what will keep him on point in the gym.
4. All of the above.
5. Pacquiao is literally just bored and we’re all looking too much into it. Maybe it’s just exciting to fight the best at 43. Politics has bored him to death and this match keeps his soul alive and brings him happiness.
