Comments Thread For: Claressa Shields: I Just Had A Never Quit Attitude Every Round

The thrill of victory could not have been more evident on the face of Claressa Shields, especially after having spent the preceding two rounds facing potential defeat. A burning desire to succeed ultimately propelled Shields to victory in her MMA debut, stopping Brittney Elkin in the 3rd round of their ESPN-televised main event Thursday evening at Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Shields admittedly entered the final round believing she was down on the scorecards though refusing to taste her first loss in any combat sports medium.

More boxers have crossed over to MMA and won than vice versa. Boxers have beat 3 MMA champions. Have any MMA fighters beat any former boxing champs in the ring?

sidenote: would love to know what Shields purse was considering that’s why she made the switch.

Naturally Shields must improve her grappling and BJJ skills; however, I wish she's finally develop KO power in her punches. It would make everything a great deal simpler.

She would have quit if that soccer mom she fought knew how to properly apply an armbar.

Who? Ray Mercers punchers chance worked out for him once against dumb sloth Sylvia but he'd struggle to recreate that result. Holly Holm boxed, kickboxed and was 5 years into her MMA career when she won the UFC title...with a kick, so not strictly a "boxer". Not sure who the third one is.

She was quite good. Watched some of it, Elkin was on top of her on the ground but didn't really do anything, didn't land a good strike.

Shields should fight Marshall, that's the biggest women's boxing fight. There's not much money in mma, not that much in boxing either for women but more than mma.

Didn't watch it but I wish her luck in her MMA endeavor. The smaller gloves should translate to better striking ability. Hopefully she can find the happiness and feeling of respect in MMA that she appears not to feel like she has in boxing.

If I were her I would spend the next two years fighting in MMA and perfecting the ground game and take down defence. Couldn’t hurt to do some kickboxing training specifically on knees, elbow strikes, and blocking round kicks. She will knock out most MMA females with her boxing so no real need to train in that. Obviously she’s been training in MMA for longer than most people on here think. She’s friends with Chris Cyborg so it looks like the links go back a long way. I’m ultra impressed with her poise on the ground especially in full and side mounts. I was also impressed how she countered submissions by someone who was clearly more experienced in grappling than herself. She had a very high boxing IQ and that appears to have transferred to her new sport. A two time Olympic gold medalist and multi weight undisputed champion isn’t going to be unintelligent and weak willed

Hopefully boxing fans support her. This was her first MMA fight, coming away with a win and without being submitted or choked out is already a huge win for her. Now it's about developing more.

I wonder if she plans to fight twice a year in Boxing and twice a year in MMA? Stay in shape year round and fight quarterly. If she wasn't making enough as a boxer, adding an additional revenue stream is smart. She's right to start off slow in MMA.

Overhyped in boxing and she'll be severely overhyped in MMA. Think about it, she was a " main event " in her MMA debut. And her opponent was just awful. As soon as she fights a real MMA artist , she's getting walloped. Take that to the bank. I don't care it's its 3 months from now , or a year from now, she's getting slaughtered. Any one of us even commenting on this forum here could've avoided that stiffs takedowns. That was the most pathetic MMA bout I have ever witnessed. If not the worst, then close to it . If she didn't win that fight, and she was a few moments away from losing, that would've been it for her. She's not far off from getting wacked right out of MMA. She looked horrendous.
