I do realize I am upstart appearing out of the blue the day before the fight . . . I believe BJS' complaint about the ring size had nothing to do with tactics but was about respect.
Conventional wisdom always says the ****er (Canelo) wants the smaller ring and the boxer (BJ) wants the larger ring.
IMO when BJS entered the smaller ring he got pi ssed because it looked as though Hearn was taking care of his guy over Saunders.
This is suppose to be a unification bout between two champions but the reality is Canelo is the title holder ( whatever title you want to apply to him he's got a shlt load of them) and BJS is percieved as the challenger. And I think he resents that and the ring size was just one more example of that disrespect - so he planted his feet and demand parity.
Another poster pointed out that the extra two feet makes the ring 20% larger and that means something.
But I not sure BJS is even in a position to exploit the extra area. If he stays too far away from Canelo he's going ( riight or wrong) to look like he is running. And we all agree he has to be careful the judges don't paint him in that light. So the extra space probably won't be deployed much.
And if Canelo is able to walk him down then the extra step the 20 foot ring creates isn't going to matter either.
I don't think any tactic was in BJS mind when he saw that first ring; I think he felt disrespected.
