The story behind that "match" is rather comical, too.

Ali's handlers said no grappling.

Inoki's handlers said Inoki would have no credibility without wrestling.

So that kicking is all Inoki could do, and he actually caused permanent damage to Ali's legs.

That’s just the free market at work. Also, I think it’s important to remember what Floyd was making at 23 years old. I don’t know exactly how much it was but I’m pretty sure it was closer to 4 million than 100 million. Also, he didn’t break through to the mainstream until he was 28 I believe (PPV vs. the late Arturo Gatti).

In Crawford’s case, he hasn’t ever expressed a desire to build a brand. To be honest, Bud seems to be content with where he is and he has always been indifferent to fighting marquee opponents. It seems like he doesn’t care who he fights as long as the money is right and that’s his choice.

As for Manny, he actually does have a brand, not to Floyd’s level but obviously more than any active fighter besides Canelo.

Another interesting thing about Bud is that he hasn’t been willing to play the B-side for a bigger fight. Floyd was willing to be the B-side against Arturo Gatti and it took him to another level. Then he accepted the B-side against Oscar De La Hoya and he hasn’t been the B-side since.

A decisive win against Errol Spence Jr. would do the same for Crawford but he doesn’t seem interested in being a megastar.
