Last time I watched it (two months ago) I had it 7-5 SRL but could always see a case for a draw. Have to be a bit favorable towards Hagler to have him winning.
3 close rounds (one of the early ones, 10, 11) and I gave 2 of those 3 to Hagler. Hagler was robbed, the worst it should be was 114-114 if you gave all 3 of those to SRL.
That 118-110 Leonard scorecard is one of the most ridiculous ones I've ever seen.
This was before my time and I'm still trying to learn my boxing history... With that being said. Was there controversy surrounding this decision back in the day? Who was claiming robbery? Did Hagler feel he won? Or was it mainly fans creating the noise?
It was a very close fight, debatable. Ray was getting his share of gifts at that time (He would go on to weight drain the LHW champ to 168 to win both his LHW belt, and the brand new WBC 168 belt) then got the gift among gifts after that in the Hearns rematch. So these three fights being back to back to back really didn't help. Plus, Hagler had been trying to get this fight made since 1982. Ray instead, retired. And then when he sat in the crowd for Hagler/Mugabi in 1986 decided he finally wanted the fight. Lot of A side drama before A side drama really existed.
In my eyes though, the main controversy lies with the 118-110 Leonard scorecard. If there were three, incredibly close cards I doubt people still talk about this.
- -Heh, heh, keyboard war room with itchy finger on his ignorant button...priceless!!! Replace Ray cartoon wide score with Marv's winning score and voila! Close split decision for Marv who admittedly gave up the first four rds trying to prove he was the better orthodox boxer than Ray. End of the day, Marv lost the battle but won the war when he left the ring with half of Ray fans firmly in his corner for life to add on to his own substantial fans. C'est la vida...
