Boxing is dead in The UK.

Boxing may not be what it was in the past. Will it recover? Time will tell. One thing I can gaurantee is no matter how many people say the UFC is bigger than boxing now, UFC will never and i repeat NEVER reach boxing's pinnacle. It wont come close. Start producing some olympic medalists, starts producing fighters who lift an entire nation (JCC, Duran, Ali, Pacman, etc), start producing multi division champions, make the frontpage of a newspaper, etc etc etc.
I think a large part of the reason boxing isn't as popular is because people who could potentially be great fighters are turning to easier sports. Boxing is the hardest sport in the world, if you can make better money doing something easier why wouldn't you?Comment

Very ignorant post above me. He said most talented boxers are turning to other sports to make money because its easier. He is very wrong. Yes these other sports are easier. But your odds of making a pro team and lasting more then a year are so slim its not even worth trying. Your odds of making money in a pro sport are so slim. And you need to be soOOOOOOOOOOOOO extroadinary to make a pro team today and stay on that team because there will always be bigger better younger athletes who will work harder looking at your spot on the team.Comment

Ignorant? Boxing is the hardest sport in the world. Requires the most sacrifice if you actually want to make it. Making it no pro sport is easy genius, but boxing is the hardest. Go look up an espn study on the world's hardest sport & then come back at me.Comment

Copy and paste alert!!!! You didn't write that!!!No joke! I use to read this all the time on Boxing Scene and I thought it was a load of rubbish, people trying to make a tread to be argumentative. The Truth is though it is in the UK. I can tell you the name of half the players in the Premier-League and who they are playing next. I couldn’t do that without boxing though. I mean in the daily newspapers there is like 20 pages of football and about once a week one page on boxing. This week is was on Muhammad Ali and Ricky Hatton in Manchester.
To tell the truth Boxing Scene is the only place I can get boxing news in the UK. There is no media coverage what so ever. Sky Sports don’t even advertise fights any more. I don’t even know last time ITV or the BBC showed a fight or watched boxing for that matter.
In terms of quality of fighters and boxing match ups it’s great. Can the average person tell you who and when these are fighting? I say not. I don’t even know when Mayweather and Juan Manuel Marquez are fighting, yet alone what channel to be frank.
For instance I know when UFC is on because Bravo/ESPN is always advertising it. Even Sky Sports is starting to.
I don’t have time for Boxing Scene no more or look it up on Boxrec. So how am I meant to be an avid fan? What I need is it for me to pick the paper up at work a read it there. That is were your problem and mine lies there. There is no coverage what so ever. I know there are amazingly talented fighters out there and some epic fight. No one ever knows about them tho!Comment

I was raised in the U.K and I'd say I've checked in on this site on most days within the last five years and before that I was reading any boxing books from boot-sales that I could get my hands on.
So I guess really if you love the sport enough, you'll do your research.
For me the sport of boxing was like one beautiful tapestry, one long uninterrupted tale of sadness and heroism, mortality and immortality.
I figure I'll spend the rest of my life reading contently.

I feel for the British with the current TV situation but this is just the typical panic mode of boxing fans.
Only two years ago you had something like 3-4 title holders. I went to the Calzaghe-Kessler fight and there is no way that a fight in North America could get the same amount of press coverage and 55k in attendance today, Calzaghe was even voted the BBC athlete of the year.
We get some of Sky Sports news shows in North America and again the amount of press for Hatton-Mayweather/Pac would be impossible here. Come on now, there was boxing on network TV (ITV) only a year ago and all I heard a year ago was how good the TV situation was compared to the late 90's when everything was on PPV. I understand that loosing Setanta/ITV is a big blow but this has only been a problem for a few months. The British amateur scene is also well ahead of most countries and you just had numerous Olympic medalists.
Guess what? Boxing will never be as popular as the Premiership or the NFL (in the USA), casual fans will only know a few fighters and if you are a real fan you will need to read online boxing news sites.Comment
