Comments Thread For: De La Hoya: If Vergil Ortiz Beats Maurice Hooker, He's Going Straight To The Top

Literally born into the fight game and having experienced the sport at the top level both as a boxer and as a promoter. Oscar De La Hoya likes to believe he has a flair for recognizing talent. With that comes the belief that in Vergil Ortiz Jr., a star in the making is on display this weekend.

Beating the legendary Maurice Hooker puts him straight to the top. It will be a very good win but nobody will be lining up to fight him any time soon.

I like both fighters and think that Ortiz is the slight favorite. But ODLH can sell this fight a bit different than saying such a ridiculous statement like that. When Hooker stepped it up he got stopped.

Hooker loses 1x and hes a bum lol... Anyways, Ortiz is only 22, its a big step up in class for him. Hooker is vulnerable but he can also crack and has a good team behind him.

Personally Im not sold on Ortiz yet, this fight imo will show if he has what it takes to be in with top 10 guys.

I’m saying it now, when Vergil Ortiz Jr. career is over he’ll be remembered as an All Time Great of his era. At 22 yrs old, the kid has shown the willingness to fight anyone and duck no one. For myself, that’s the one attribute I value the most out of any boxer in the modern era. As for this Hooker fight, don’t see the outcome any different than Ortiz last 16 fights, a KO victory for the kid out of Grand Prairie,TX. Would love to see Vergil get some rounds in but don’t see Hooker with standing the onslaught Ortiz has in store for him. Should be a fun night of fights, Golden Boy always seems to put on some entertaining undercards unlike matchroom.

Was never fully sold on Hooker. His best wins are Saucedo and Flanagan, at super light. Not sure it says or means all that much if Ortiz beats him.

This fight is all wrong for Hooker, he loves to stand in range and throw. He is susceptible to right hands as we saw with the Jose Ramirez fight. Vergil has much more power than Ramirez, so I expect a quick night for Ortiz!
