  • Comments Thread For: Artur Beterbiev - Kick Start The Light Heavyweight Class

By Cliff Rold - Light heavyweight has pieces. It also has, on paper, plenty of clash. It's a division where many of the best have already faced each other. What light heavyweight lacks is much momentum. COVID played a part but it's a surprising turn when one considers where matters were at the end of 2019. Saul Alvarez stopped Sergey Kovalev late in the year to infuse his star power.

I wish I knew the one real reason that light heavy is not showing up more on the cards. I have seen a lot of fights that do not make a lot of noise get made for a good bit of money in lesser wght classes. Part could just be cancellations, the Adonis/Gvyos fight did put a damper on things for sure, but that itself dont tell it. It is a good division the weight class not a stepping stone class at all. As far as fan interest you have to put the fights out there first to create interest not the other way around. Maybe this weekend could spark something and force another fight then that will spark a few more, that is all it usually takes but getting it started takes more then talk takes putting a few fighters in the ring.

I think it's because Alvarez is held to a different standard than everyone else in the sport, now if you ask me I think that speaks about his quality. People want to see him lose so they will call for him fighting every top guy out there.

I think it's more a compliment to his abilities.

There's nothing abnormal about that. In EVERY sport, I don't care if it's NFL, NBA, UFC, the best teams and individuals are held to the highest standards. Boxing seems to be the only sport where people don't want that standard. Why is that? If you call yourself the pound for pound king and the face of the sport, then you have to fight the best opposition. Every other sport works this way.

Beterbiev is one of my favorites out there right now. But these 175 guys need to get moving. It is not just about the big fights, it will also be about making sure there is time for rematches if the big fights live up to the billing. Those rematches may be the actual money makers.

Agreed. That's why people complain about trash matchups like Canelo vs Yldirim and Crawford vs Brook, I just want to see the best fight the best, but I can't lie my favorite fighter is Alvarez and I think is resume is above everyone's not named Pacquiao.

There's nothing wrong with being an Alvarez fan. There's also nothing wrong with thinking his resume is above everyone not named Pacquiao. But if you want the distinction of being the king of boxing, you also have to accept the higher standards of athlete conduct that come along with it. You will be held to a higher standard and be forced to face better opponents. That's the same way they treat guys like Brady in the NFL. UFC top guys. LeBron in the NBA. Because right now connelo is transcending boxing and if you want to talk about how his name is mentioned with guys like Brady, LeBron, Ronaldo, Tiger Woods, then that means he has to be held to their standard. Nobody cares about who Beterbiev fights because, well, nobody cares about Beterbiev. Talented as he may be. If Beterbiev were the pound for pound king of boxing making $400 million contracts and he had 10 guys begging to fight him then I'd go all in on him for fighting this guy.
