Comments Thread For: Joe Frazier Statue, Mural Unveiled In Philadelphia To Honor 'Fight Of The Century'

To commemorate the 50th anniversary for the fight of the century and his win over Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier was memorialized with a bronze statue in his adopted hometown of Philadelphia on Monday. The 9-foot-tall, 1,600-pound statue designed by Chris Collins captures Smokin' Joe connecting with his trademark left hook on Ali, much like he did on March 8, 1971 at the Madison Square Garden in New York City during his hellacious slugfest and 15-round unanimous decision win.

It would have been nice to see a clearer picture of the statue and mural but I understand the whole COVID restrictions.

Yes, it is beyond belief. It does say a lot about Philadelphia though. Fantasy over reality despite Frazier doing what many considered impossible.

I see a lot of that these days. And it’s not like the Rocky movies came out in the early 70s or mid 60s. Frazier had contributed more to his city by the time Rocky movies started coming out.

Not really. Rocky made Philly a million times more famous than Joe Frazier ever did.

Nice to see that Philly finally listened to Bill Burr's Philly Rant. It's only been nearly 20 years...

Not that crazy. The default is to have no statue, naturally. Stallone paid for the statue to be created. It was then put in place in Philly as a prop for the making of Rocky III and the rest sprung from that. It wasn't like the city itself paid to put the thing there.
