By Cliff Rold - An eye injury kept 23-year old Mexican Bantamweight Abner Mares (19-0, 12 KO) out of the ring for almost a year. So far it hasn’t cost him anything but time. Making his second start of 2009, and since the injury, Mares scored a brutal body-shot knockout in the sixth round against the Dominican Republic’s Carlos Fulgencio (11-3-1, 7 KO) on Thursday night at Club Nokia in Los Angeles, California.
It was Fulgencio’s third stoppage defeat in five contests. Mares entered the contest rated #8 by the WBC, #3 by the IBF, and #4 by the WBO, jeopardizing none of those positions with his performance. Mares entered the bout less than a pound over the division limit at 118 ¾ with Fulgencio tipping the scales at 119 ¾. [details]
