Miguel Cotto: "Me and Pacquiao Will Be a War"

Originally posted by JBell11 View PostOk...IMO, again Cotto takes this one. Pacman has speed. The guy has the fastest hands...even DLH said it. But guess what...SSM and Judah had speed too...and you really can't downplay either of those guys speed, granted they might not be where they were 4-5 years ago but they are pretty damn quick. The real reason why I believe Cotto will take this one? TIMING. That's it. Number 1 - Cotto was able to time clottey before clottey let that shot go...Cotto slid in and put that jab in his face...(off balance or not...Clottey did not see that coming) 2. Cotto really did a good job with Margo for the fight he let those punches go before Margo could and slid out. (Remember it's about time not "gassing out") number 3. Finally TIMING is what gave so many problems to Pacman, in both his fights with Marquez...Marquez was able to "outthink" pacman (Jim Lampley 2nd fight)
My conclusion...Speed kills, but when you have an experienced person who can time speed like Cotto has in his past fights with "speed/Boxer-types", coupled with the idea that pacman who had trouble with a person (Marquez) who can TIME a punch...I don't see Pacman surving well timed punches from a legit WW. Both are good respectively, but again...people can't count Cotto out he is alot smarter th an people give him credit for. Someone here said it...too PACMAN walked into a trap. A well timed trap.
LMAO!!!
Comparing Clottey and Margo against Pacman is absolute nonsense! Cotto timed Clottey and Margo's attacks because they are in slow motion when compared to a Pacquiao attack who's seems to be on warp speed. Cotto's excellent jab have worked well against orthodox boxers, but it won't be that effective against a southpaw. I've seen orthodox boxers who's a bit reluctant to throw their jabs as much as they used to against a southpaw because the southpaw's lead right hand seems to be always in the way.
I believe the key to a Cotto win is with his right hand, an overhand right or a straight, ALA Marquez, and not with his main offensive weapon, his powerful left jab and his punishing body punch. Pacman won't play dead in a corner and let Cotto have a field day on his breadbasket, Pacquiao will be constantly moving in different angles. You also said that Cotto will time Manny eventually, counter him when he's on the attack mode, that could very well happen, but I wouldn't count on it like it's a lock. I have this crazy notion that even Pacman himself doesn't know what he'll do next when he's on the offensive mode, that's why his movements are so unpredictable. He's a geometrical nightmare for his opponents. His moves are so varied and unexpected (that you won't see everyday in a boxing match) that he seems to be just playing it by ear.
If I were training Miguel Cotto, I will advise to him to show his left, and catch Pacman with his right on the fly...Last edited by gopi11; 08-28-2009, 07:43 AM.

Remember, Pacquiao does NOT put "constant offensive pressure" on opponents, but cotto does put pressure on fighters with speed (judah, malinaggi, etc)
Yeah, Pacman is a slacker...

Thnx for your well thought off input about this fight. Your in-depth analysis of both boxers is well beyond your years! BTW, how old are you? 12? 8???

What I did say was that Cott was able to time punches very well. With that being said...Pacman had LEGITIMATE PROBLEMS with MARQUEZ (who as you put is an ORTHODOX fighter) NOT because of speed...but TIMING. Pacman does move erradiccly but that didn't stop marquez from beating him in the first fight. (Yes I said beat him in the first fight) so again MY point is that Cotto is a smart boxer who can time speed, who will give Pacman alot of issues come Nov 14th. PLEASE read before commenting.
Point taken, and my bad if I came in a little out of sort for your post, but here's what you said:

Cotto was able to time Clottey coming in, that's where the difference lies. Cotto might not be able to see Pacman coming in, and in every conceivable angle, and from different directions. He's like everywhere, which I couldn't say the same for Clottey.
As for the Margo fight, it will be the other way around, at least most of the time. Pacman will be able to let his punches go off first before Cotto could fire back, maybe 80% of the time, for as long as the fight will last.
Anyways, it's all good here, and I hope you are too...
