Where did the Paul Williams hype all begin?

Seriously I still dont see what the big deal is.

Yes he has long arms and high work rate.

He pretty much had a clsoe fight with Margarito but got the decision and it wasnt till Margo defeated Cotto in a classic fight that Williams became this legendary boxing figure

Then he fights Quintana and clearly loses a decision
This loss is usually reffered to as a "poor showing" by the Punisher..a fluke.
and wins the rematch by 1st round stoppage, which is good.

Moved up to face Andy Kolle 1st round KO.
    Verno Philips...no comment.
Winky who hasnt been relevant for years!

I couldnt believe when Dan Raphael said "the smart money" would be on Williams in the Pavlik fight! Is it because of Pavliks rumored alcoholism? Then I can see his point but Williams hasnt faced top opposition so how is it smart to assume he can beat eveyone. He gets hit cleanly in every fight and never faced a puncher.

I agree 100%. The Quintana fight showed he was nothing but a freakshow that used his natural assets to win against smaller opponents, but as a boxer was far from a p4p material. Thats why I get all irritated with all the fuss around this guy. He's such a hype!

I think Paul would lose to Pavlik or Hopkins but he can beat many other really good fighters. I believe the Paul Williams hype(or skill, whatever)began after beating Margarito and then he found it difficult to get big name fights. Paul is a great fighter and can beat a lot of the top fighters in the sport but the two fights that are rumored out there would be toughies.

i've been wondering the same thing... He is a good boxer.. im not taking anything away from him.. but he is not great by any means.. he hasn't really fought anyone impresive.. i want to see him fight pavlik.. i think Pavlik would school him and knock him out personally

would he still be all hype if he were to beat Pavlik? or would you say that Pavlik was way over hyped also.

It's because of how avoided he was at welterweight. Margarito is the only big star that ever fought him and Margarito though well known was not a big star yet. He is is basically the new Winky Wright, a really tough fighter who is not worth the risk. When fighters are avoided they get overrated quick.

And then he owned Quintana in 1 round! People need to get off the first fight, it was simply a bad night at the office. Paul eats up all B class fighters like Quintana.

                  - Top class ability
                  - Willingness to fight the best almost disregarding weight divisions in the process (!)
                  - Very strong recent standard of opposition (yes, Winky was still dangerous and two weight divisions above what P Will considers home for now). He's laying the foundations for a great resume.

You called it. Marg winnin that fight made Pwill look gr8. And of course, Mr boat buyer's ****suckers jumped on his nuts since he was Marg's top threat and had that win on him. They remain there to this day, tho Marg is outta the picture. It's all about SSM and Cotto now. Too bad cuz Pwill is a ****in beast and deserves some more genuine fans to rep him.
