Boxing Should Be Banned in Civilized Countries

    Saw this interesting article:

    Round 4
    by Dr. George Lundberg

Boxing should be banned in civilized countries. So trumpeted The Journal of the American Medical Association on January 14, 1983, capturing the attention of a vast worldwide audience of supporters and critics.

    Was boxing banned?
No. It was a stiff opening jab, but not a knockout punch.

    Was it intensely scrutinized?
You bet, even including hearings in the United States Congress. The AMA and dozens of other national and specialty medical societies fell into line, demanding a ban. Even the Olympic Committees reexamined the activity.

    What is wrong with boxing?
In addition to a host of sociologic concerns, boxing is wrong medically, since it not only kills some participants, it inflicts objectively proven chronic brain damage in as many as 80% of fighters who have had a substantial number of fights. It is wrong morally, because the intent of the "sport" is to harm the opponent in order to win, preferably by knockout -- brain damage by definition.

These 2 objections, medical and moral, separate boxing from all other risk sports.

    What did improve?
    • Shorter fights
    • Referees stopping fights earlier
    • Better medical exams by better trained doctors -- albeit of questionable ethics-- before fights.
    • Fighters blinded by previous boxing injuries are now usually prevented from fighting.

But blows to the head still damage the brain, whether acutely or long term, whether the fighter whose fist inflicts the blow is paid or not, and whether the head in which the brain resides is or is not clad with "protective" headgear. Loads of letters and Rounds 2 and 3 soon followed in JAMA, each with a new twist.

The same could be said about countless other sports, like football, which has probably done more damage than boxing overall. If you like doing it and accept the risks, then why not.

Remember that Olympics boxing uses headgear now, similar to football.

            Boxing was banned.

In 393 A.D., the Olympics were banned by the Christian emperor Theodosius, and in 500 A.D., boxing was banned altogether by Theodoric the Great as being an insult to God because it disfigures the face, the image of God.

In Norway and Sweden, Professional Boxing is banned.

Talking about going deep in history... very interesting. History is pretty funny some times, I am no history buff but I like reserching intersting stuff and I find very funny that Theodoric banned boxing for that reason and still did this that I found in wikipidea

"Theodoric came with his army to Italy in 488, where he won the battles of Isonzo and Verona in 489 and at the Adda in 490. In 493 he took Ravenna. On February 2, 493, Theodoric and Odoacer signed a treaty that assured both parties would rule over Italy. A banquet was organised in order to celebrate this treaty. It was at this banquet that Theodoric, after making a toast, killed Odoacer with his own hands."

Boxing in the USA and some other countries is still a very profitable entertainment venue and as long it has fans, and good return on investment for the promoters it wont die.

most of us in this forum understand the dangers, and see the warning signs for fighters.

i.e. most would agree that rid**** bowe should not be licensed.

boxing will always remain, but commissions should be quicker to ban fighters that have diminished skills, and show obvious signs of detirioation of normal human function.
