Tyson is right, Klitschko's are great fighters, by far the most skilled in the HW division. But they are not superstars, only genuine boxing outside Eastern-Europe seems to know them. (and the occasional casual fan)
Mike Tyson quote in SI "There are no stars in the heavyweight division.

Or to trashtalk and evade the draft
Add to it that the age for "superstars" is over (it was mainly the 70ies, 80ies and a bit of the 90ies). Not even Tyson would be a superstar if he would start to box in the 2000ies. The world is way too diversified to accept superstars. Or do you think that Christina Aguilera can be ever as popular as Madonna? Or that Heath Ledger will be as famous as James Dean? Or that Rowan Atkinson can be ever as worldwide known as Charlie Chaplin?
Part of their status until today is because they are "famous for being famous", or how many people have actually WATCHED Charlie Chaplin movies recently?
Moreover the world is now approx. twice as large as during Muhammad Ali's times. You could make an argument, that Klitschkos are known to more people worldwide than Muhammad Ali during his active years.
One should make some survey by showing pictures of Ali, Klitschko and Tyson and then ask "Who is this" to get a ranking. You can make it easier by making a earnings ranking which pretty much shows how famous you are.Last edited by knn; 08-20-2009, 07:34 AM.Comment

Tyson isn't really saying anything against the Klitschko brothers in this quote. He's simply saying they're not superstars, which is true. They are not world wide superstars.
Everyone knew that Lennox Lewis was the HW champion of the world, why not the Klitschkos?

Mike Tyson was a huge superstar long before he was convicted for **** or bite Holyfield.
He was on Sport Illustrated frontpage even before he had faught a numer 10 contender.
so thats not correct at all. But it is off course a better story when a guy is 20 years and hevyweight champion then 35,and Tyson did have an interesting story as wellComment

unless the heavyweight champion of the world is american he wont get famous globally. and i'll tell you why, because if people in america dont know who you are people in other countries wont either. and if you aint american people in america wont know who you are. americans are xenophobic and ignorant so offcourse they wont know you if you are from europe for example. thats just the way it is.Comment

Wlad needs to go back to his old style( Mercer fight), if he can do more like he did in this fight, he 'll get more fans.
Tyson doesn't diss them but tell the truth. He respects the K bros but admits that they're not exciting. Wlad vs Chaga was horrible like the Sultan fight. Lennox Lewis was sometimes exciting, like he was against Grant, Botha.
The last time Wlad was in a great fight was the Sam Peter fight.
It's better for Wlad to keep winning and dominating (much like Lewis and Holmes did before him) the way he's been doing then trying to force himself to fight a style that probably wont make make him any more popular in the USA but will definitely lead to him getting knocked out again, which is what I suspect is what many are hoping will happen...Comment

"There are no stars in the heavyweight division. [Vitali Klitschko] is a great fighter but he's not exciting, he's not a superstar. You don't draw the people like that. When you're the heavyweight champ of the world, the whole world should know who you are."
This is from this week's Sports Illustrated. I think it's supposed to be Wlad he's talking about but the point is the same either way.Comment
