Goldfather Steward: Pacquiao is not God or Superman

There are those wingnuts out there who believe that Miguel Cotto against Manny Pacquiao is a donkey against a thoroughbred racehorse.

Mark them down: uneducated fools from uneducated schools, I guess.

No less an authority than Kronk Gym Goldfather Manny Steward told me Tuesday too much is made out of Megamanny’s last two bouts, against opponents who offered too little.

At the same time, Steward said (and I concur) that too much is made out of the Boricua Bomber’s crunching TKO loss to Antonio Margarito and his troubles while surviving a nasty cut to outpoint Joshua Clottey.

In fact, Steward said, if he had been calling the shots in the Cotto camp, the popular Puerto Rican fighter would still be unbeaten and would have dodged the difficult Clottey.

“If I was Miguel’s manager, I would have steered clear of Margarito like everyone else was. And I would have never put him in with Clottey. I’d have never had Miguel fight either of those two guys.”

The HBO color commentator makes it plain that he is no way belittling Pacman’s accomplishments nor the Herculean training efforts of Coach Freddie Roach. At the same time, attention must be paid to what Oscar de la Hoya and Ricky Hatton brought to the ring which wasn’t much.

“In Manny’s favor, you must say he did what he had to do with both guys. Manny and his trainer handled everything right as far as what they could control. But don’t get carried away and make Manny a god or a Superman who can never be beat.”

I pointed out to the Hall Of Fame trainer and developer of the great Thomas “Hitman” Hearns that Pacquiao effectively brought down the curtain on the ring careers of both Oscar and the fun loving British boxer.

“Oh, yes, that is quite an achievement when you look at what those guys had done before,” Steward said. “And Manny just crushed them both but I think this is why the Cotto fight is misleading for some people.

“Give Manny all the credit but you can’t say he’s become some invincible guy now. I mean, look Oscar came into the ring a physical wreck. Ricky Hatton ran up into the ring with no plan at all. Those are just facts of life.”

As far as Steward possibly becoming Cotto’s trainer, he said he has not been campaigning for the gig.

“It’s just people and fans who keep calling me from Puerto Rico. I’ve had no direct contact with Cotto on this. Between my fighters, working with a new amateur series in Detroit and my HBO work, I am more than busy.

“I said, ‘Oh, my,’ when I heard Cotto was fighting Margarito to begin with. Same with Clottey but for different reasons. That guy keeps a tight defense and you’ve got to throw 10 punches to get one in with him. Those two guys brought a lot more into the ring against Miguel than Oscar and Ricky did against Manny.”

This is what I been saying for the longest.

If you switch Clottey and Hatton....Miguel would be coming off the impressive victory and Manny would be coming off a tough loss to a much bigger man.

Thats just the way it is.

how can you even compare pac fights to cotto fights?

the great thing about pac fight is he comes up in weight and beat hatton and DLH convincingly,

if cotto fights hatton at 140, it will be worse than JMM vs may because cotto is a legit WW, while hatton is JWW. maybe it will sell 1 ticket per 2 days

if cotto fights against DLH, is should be at 154, and i think DLH will win that fight and DLH is still a boxer right now.

then how can you match pac vs clottey/marg so casually? @ that time pac is 135 and its a mortal sin to say pac with clottey / margaritto / cotto / mosley in 1 sentence, but because of pac`s greatness, now its allowed to say this things?
its like saying cotto should fight pavlik @ 160, but no one is saying that right? because cotto is not that great yet, he is just an ordinary guy @ 147

I believe that's the reason why we all respect Cotto even if your not a huge fan. He will fight anyone and that's old school right there. Also I think we all know that Floyd fought beat better versions of Hatton and Hoya, but we know Manny won't say it. But I can't take away from Pac's performance against either. They thought the could beat the lil Pinoy because of there size. Plus they knew they would make a lot of cash. So they both have to live with the most embarrising loses of their career. Can't blame the Pacman

so, he wanted cotto to duck clottey, and margarito? nah.

i do believe that he can make cotto a better boxer though, like he did wlad.

the fact that he hasn't been contacted tells you that the arrogance from cotto's camp is astounding.they didn't check plastercheato's wraps, then his father gives a vote of confidence to that no-trainer his son has.

they just don't wanna pay the money to a top guy i guess. sucks when money gets in the way of doing everything you can to be great.

why not let cotto fight margs or clottey.. sure they were difficult fighters and probably took alot out of cotto but thats what makes cotto special.. he fights everyone... no excuses..

But he's got a point though. There's no denying that either man can win the fight, but the last 2 victories for Pacquiao have made people think he's untouchable, when in reality when he's in with fighters who are going to throw punches back, he does get hit...and often.

Even after the Oscar win people here were saying he can't compete with real WWs, but then he KO's Hatton in 2 rounds and now he can?
