I think his chin used to be about average, even in his prime he got hit occasionally, and when he did he was usually fine. Him getting knocked out twice was mainly due to coming down from heavyweight, that affected his punch resistance quite a lot. But also his reflexes declined and he was getting tagged with shots he never would have gotten hit with before.
The beating he took from Joe was nasty, although it showed his chin isnt complete glass, even in this diminshed state he still managed to stand a full 12 whilst taking quite a few shots and suffering a gash. Although Joe is by no means a devastating puncher.Comment

Not really. His knockout loss to Johnson was kind of weak in my opinion,And the fact that he was out for aslong as he was was even worse,It's not the type of shot that should even really hurt an opponent
nevertheless,Jones never looked comfortable in taking shots after his move back down to 175.He didn't lost fat when he moved back down,He lost muscle and an awful lot of muscle at that,Which isnt advised at that ageComment

I don't remember the thread or who it was but somebody posted a video in a similar thread showing the difference in Roy's ability to take a shot before and after the Ruiz fight. He got hit with plenty of shots like the ones Tarver and Johnson got him with and didn't buckle or anything.
His chin was fine until the move up and back down.Comment

roy never recovered from the weightloss. having fought myself i know from experience when u drop alot of weight in short period of time u lose punch resistance. and after the first KO his chin mightve been cracked.
there used to be a guy named mike in my gym who i would spar with all the time, very good boxer but not a big puncher, never hurt me in countless sparring sessions. in time i grew out of my division but kept trying to make the wieght which involved losing alot of weight at times, in that state he once caiught me and hurt me pretty bad.
end of the day its all speculation with roy though, cuz nobody really tested his chin in his prime. all im saying is its very possible he had a great chin but the weightloss messed him up. but since he never really got tagged he couldve had a average chin all along (it still wasnt that bad).Comment

Jones Jr. is a text book example of someone who lost their chin. You don't go from being hit by a heavyweight, to barely being able to take a counter two weights down if you have a glass jaw. A glass jaw is a glass jaw, if somebody touches that thing, you're going down.
I put Ricky Hatton in this category as well. He had good chops until he started messing around at WW. I suspect he'd be KO'd by C+/B fighters now if he kept on.Comment

He handled Ruiz punch and Ruiz is much bigger than Johnson and Tarver. He lost his chin after he moved down to LHW.Comment
