5 REASONS: Why Boxing on Network TV is Not a Good Idea

Here's my opinion on why putting boxing on mainstream network TV is a bad idea.

Delayed telecast - because of commercials between rounds, the TV feed from the network would be delayed.

Waiting - viewers would be annoyed because of the number of TV ads between rounds.

Few Superstars - you can count with one hand how many superstars there are. Not enough to attract mainstream audience.

Unpredictability - team sports has predictable time, boxing time is variable. What happens to the commercials if the fight lasted only 1 round?

Boxing is not mainstream - team sports are now in the forefront.

yea, because people never watch football on ABC or anything.
commercials are only during the break inbetween rounds, which imo is pretty tedious to sit through on its own if there arent any replays.
Few Superstars - you can count with one hand how many superstars there are. Not enough to attract mainstream audience.
more superstars would be born if boxing was on mainstream television. how are you supposed to create a loyal fanbase when its so difficult to tune into your fight? most big stars start off on public television/ESPN.
Unpredictability - team sports has predictable time, boxing time is variable. What happens to the commercials if the fight lasted only 1 round?
football games dont have a set time either. it would make no difference, and the channels would have 'filler' stuff to get on a normal schedule.
Boxing is not mainstream - team sports are now in the forefront.
it would be more mainstream if everyone could see it. because its only (mostly) available on premium channels/ppv, its much more of a niche sport.

No, just two 30 second commercials

Waiting - viewers would be annoyed because of the number of TV ads between rounds.
No, the wait would be no longer than regular. The only difference is you watch a commercial instead of Jack Leow telling Kelly Pavlik to "double the ****ing jab."

Few Superstars - you can count with one hand how many superstars there are. Not enough to attract mainstream audience.
They would be stars after only ONE good performance on free tv.

Unpredictability - team sports has predictable time, boxing time is variable. What happens to the commercials if the fight lasted only 1 round?
Take an extra long commercial break before announcing the official decision.

Boxing is not mainstream - team sports are now in the forefront.
MAYBE BECAUSE ITS NOT ON ****ING NETWORK TV!

Not true because usually they just show one ad between each round (in the uk at least)

Waiting - viewers would be annoyed because of the number of TV ads between rounds.
As I say they usually only put one on between each round, but yeah its really annoying, i like to see whats going on in the corner, i dont know why they ant just put an ad on the bottom half of the screen

Few Superstars - you can count with one hand how many superstars there are. Not enough to attract mainstream audience.
*****g it on Terrestrial will create stars

Unpredictability - team sports has predictable time, boxing time is variable. What happens to the commercials if the fight lasted only 1 round?
Put on a replay of undercard fights, hold interviews or show a short documentary?

Boxing is not mainstream - team sports are now in the forefront.
Yeah but it doesnt have to stay that way.

Two of your reasons "Boxing is not mainstream" and "Few superstars" are a direct result of lack of boxing exposure (on media venues such as network tv). So Boxing is in a Catch-22. Not mainstream and few superstars because of lack of network tv, but there shouldn't be network tv exposure because it's not mainstream and there are only a few superstars?

"Waiting" during time-outs during any other sport annoys me and millions of other fans as well of team sports, which is exactly why they're dying as well, people are annoyed.

And would the "Delayed telecast" be that terrible? Honestly. German TV showed Klitschko v. Chagaev with commericals in between rounds. And boxing is wildly popular over there. I don't see it dying because of commericals.

Your strongest argument is for "Unpredictability", but they could fill it with commercial runs or undercard fights or interviews, and another poster mentioned.
