Jim Braddock
Not exactly a great champion but he is remembered very fondly.
Pipino Cuevas, as mentioned earlier, was handpicked as an easy title defense for Angel Robinson Garcia, but Cuevas devastated him and went onto defend his title more than 10 times.
Saoul Mamby was the exact opposite of Balboa style-wise but he went into a title fight with nearly as many losses as wins, took the fight to the Thai champion Saensak Muangsurin in his hometown and was robbed of a decision.
In his next title shot against South Korean Sang Hyun Kim, he was once again fighting in the champion's hometown but this time he didn't let the fight go into the judges' hands and stopped Kim in the 14th round. He made 5 defenses of the title.
He recently made a comeback at the age of 60, much like Balboa!

Well Rocky was a champ,so whoever is to be picked, should have been champ!!Then they have got to be loved greatly by tons of people!!Then they have to have an exciting style based more so on power than actuall skill!!Then they have to have a suspect chin, because Rocky ate canvas a whole bunch!!Then they have to have a great fighter to elevate them to great status,in the win!!Then they have to have 1 last great fight in a losing effort!!The only name I can think of to match this pretty closely,is Tito Trinidad!!

I'd have to agree with the dude that brought up Pipino, i didn't know his exact record before he got the title match, but he defended it for a while after that. Thanks for the info on this.

I'd have to say Arturo Gatti, in the sense that neither had much defense to speak of. Gatti also wasn't the most athletically gifted fighter and overachieved by relying highly on his balls and punching power to overcome adversity.
I can't say he exactly overcame a lot of opponents he should've otherwise succumbed to like Rocky did, but he definitely brought it.
