Hey guys I always know that Toney makes an excuse for his loss to Jones.. He always says "I was sick I lost weight Blah blah blah".. I know boxers make excuses to protect their egos and I think this is what Toney was doing.. I mean come on It was such a lopsided beating.. If it was a close fight I might buy the argument.. What do you guys think?
TONEY VS. JONES!! Was the weight loss really an issue

Its simple...watch the fight. Then watch Toney's other fights and compare. IMO Toney looked sluggish against Jones. Simple as that, he didn't perform like he normally did. Back then, weight was the big issue with Toney. He was fighting at 175lbs before he fought Jones.Originally posted by SokoHey guys I always know that Toney makes an excuse for his loss to Jones.. Good question...he would have performed much better IMO. Win? I'm not sure, Jones was on fire at that time. It would have been a much better fight, I know that for sure.Originally posted by marvelous_TGso you think if toney wasen't affected by the weightloss he would of have beat jones? i don'tComment

hmm
Toney's style was not right to beat Roy at all. He was a counter-puncher with no foot movement. That only works if you are fighting an old Roy like Tarver did. In his prime, I really don't see Toney beaing able to beat Roy. Toney is much more likely to be unmotivated than Roy is.Comment

I agree. Toney wasn't as ring-wise as he is now and didn't really take the lead in a fight very well. He probably would never beat Roy prime for prime based on their styles. I think Toney was always in turmoil because of his weight issues, but that was no excuse for his performance against Roy. He was unmotivated and drained but he probably would have lost under any circumstance, unless of course he hit Roy with a Mike Nunn left hook.Comment

Yeah I've been wanting to see that fight. People tell me Toney was behind on all cards and then he KO'd Michael Nunn with one perfect shot. Toney places shots very well at times.Comment

It was amazing fight. Toney was being outboxed by the incredibly skilled Nunn but started taking over in the 9th. All Nunn had to do was stay away for a few rounds and he had the fight. I think I had it 6-2-1 through 9 rounds and then all of a sudden the momentum just completely shifted. Toney hit him with an extremely hard hook and hurt him...and then another that put him down. Nunn got up and JT finished him. Definitely James' crowning moment. Back in the day NO ONE wanted Nunn. He was quite the well rounded fighter...James just put the heat on him.Comment
