I watched the fights Vitali vs. Peter and JCG last weekend, and was looking specifically for "sluggishness" on Vitali's side. He was that dominant, that he did not care to protect his chin all the time, but stamina was no issue.

I think, Vitali is in a better shape NOW, than Lewis' was at 37. Klitschko did not fade much in his hiatus. He would still be a worthy challenge for a prime Lewis. A prime Lewis would win for sure, but would have to work VERY HARD for it.

As much as I respect Lewis for his overall career, I still think he should have rematched Vitali. Lewis avoided a rematch to retire "undefeated".

Vitali took 4 years off. That is a factor when you compare him to an active fighter at 37.

Lewis was not undefeated and had every right to retire.

Tyson did the same thing? Are you high?

After 4 years without a fight, Vitali beat a current title holder. Tyson beat Peter McNeeley. Remind me which title he had again?

it is suprising that people arent harder on lewis for not rematching vitali. vitali wanted it so bad lewis knew there was no way in hell he had it in him to beat him again.

it seems any other great heavyweight would not have wanted to retire with an ending like this, but not many people seemed to mind so i dont blame him for not coming back.

actually if you look at it that way, i would agree, despite Peter holding a title Ali faced the better man upon his return from hiatus.

Peter was a once beaten world titlist if Ali fought better it's probably because the 70s were a golden age for the hw division. But you can't hold it Vitali that todays hws aren't HOF loaded like other eras. I've heard some hating before but blaming Vitali for a weak hw division is classic hating.
