    Buddy McGirt Remembers Gatti-Ward I Round 9

I interviewed Buddy McGirt about 20 mins ago for an article I'm working on for next month's Boxing Digest commemorating the life and career of Arturo Gatti. Here is what Buddy had to say about the round of the century.

"I was gonna stop the fight. His friend Micky Red said "Don't stop it coach."

"They had a doctor working the corner. The doctor was talking to Arturo in Italian. He started talking to me in Italian and I said "Doc, I don't understand what the hell you're saying. I'm not Italian." He says sorry and starts speaking to me in English.

What I really loved the most was Arturo's approach. He said, "Help me stand up and I'll finish the round."

One of McGirt's favorite Arturo Gatti memories:

"I'm at his house one day, he wanted me to come over because he liked making shish-kebabs on the grill. I said, 'Man, that's a nice grill.' He goes, 'You like that grill? I didn't know you liked to barbecue.'

"The next day we came to the gym and worked out. After the workout I go home and there was a new ****ing grill in my driveway in front of my garage."

If a dude is getting creamed, best thing is to pull them out. If McGirt had pulled the plug in that round, I wouldn't have thought anything of it. Arturo was a different kind of being though, his appeal was the kind of abuse he was willing and able to take while still giving it back.
