Why i hate Panama and respect Resto

Ok lets see Resto was a fighter who moved to the Bronx from puerto rico, obviouslly he had no money a ****ty upbringing and used boxing as his way out to try and make something of himself. I mean the man obviously couldnt even afford a toothbrush. What kind of an education do you honestly think someone like resto had as a child, or if he even bothered going to class ever. Did you see the way his sister lives with her three kids and dog?. Did you listen to the way she talks? his sister is as illiterate as he is. He was raised in a ****hole in the South Bronx at a time where the South Bronx was 100 times worse then it is today, Giuliani cleaned the Bronx out in the 90's luckily. Resto sounds like a ****** and seems to me like a lot is not right upstairs. I wont blame this on boxing/drug use because his sister looks and sounds and speaks the same way as him, they are illiterate street trash. I know people like Resto through boxing, these kinds of people are the kind who do what they are told because they have NO other choice. What was Resto to do honestly when panama put plaster on his wraps and took the padding out of his gloves. Resto didnt even know what plaster was as referanced in the documentary. Resto did what he was told because if he didnt go through with it and ratted it out what was going to happen to him? the fight would of been cancelled he would of made $0.00, and he would of just gone back to his ****hole for the night without pay. He was probably told there was big money involved in what he was going to do that night if he won, so he went along with it. He had no clue what was going to happen to collins, He saw the $$$, Resto didnt have the sense to know what kind of damage he was going to cause to Collins, and i guarantee he is sorry for what he did. I have no doubt he is sorry. The dude had a **** life and the only way he was going to get out of his situation was to fight, He just went along with what he was told like many fighters would do. I put no blame on this incompetent fighter he is as ****** as a ****ing stump and he is SORRY for what he did. Let the guy live with what little dignity he has left. All he knows is boxing as you can see with his grandkids, he just gets into a boxing stance whenever he see's them and throws punches at them. He is a very sad story and i cant blame Resto. Panama is the scumbag of the earth and he'll get his.

Grown men make their own decisions, good or bad. Resto made his and it was a bad one. He had a choice. Cheat, or don't cheat. Im sure he couldn't have envisioned the tragedy that followed, but it was his own doing. No excuses made for him can change that.

I don't like either of them but Resto is the lesser of 2 evils, IMO.

just because he was raised "in a ****hole" and is illiterate means that he should do whatever he is told and not realize that having plaster in his gloves gives him an unfair advantage?

you can only blame upbringing so much... yes he is the lesser of two evils, but even a ****** would know that putting something that hard (even if you say he didn't know what plaster is) in his gloves will **** someone up..

I met Luis sometime back as I used to train at Morris Park boxing gym some years back. I partially agree with the original poster in that Luis just didn't know any better. Yes, he was a grown man that should have known better, so that's no excuse, but he looked up to Panama, and I got the impression that he saw him as a father figure that he never had, he trusted him to look out for his best interest, but got used by him. I think Luis has been punished enough. The ban should be ended IMO. Panama should never be allowed anywhere near a ring ever.

i think the big problem is that resto is not that smart of a guy. not that it excuses him but he is so emotionally immature as a grown man and he probably had the mind of a child back then. panama is no professor but he is snakey and was able to get in resto's head and reroute the conversation everytime he brought up the gloves.

i'de say i hate panama and i feel sorry for resto but as someone said up there, everyones gotta live with their choices

A boxingscene article on the doc said similar things, that Panam seemed to have some spell on Resto and intimidates him.

When Resto finally stands up to him at the end, he just looks down, mumbles "**** you" and crosses his arms. Then Panama sort of talks his way out of it.
