When I worked with plaster of paris in high school (eons ago) it was in strips that looked kinda like gauze but it was harder and a bit abrasive. It got heavy when moistened and if enough was added I grant that it would be like keeping a role of quarters in hand. Even if it didn't harden because of an inability to dry it would be heavier and maybe even reduce the contact point making the impact harder. Anything that adds more weight or solidity to the hands is going to do extra damage.
      Would you say it was flexible?? lol

              The stuff I worked with was weird. Once hardened it was not flexible, however, when stressed it would buckle but not completely break apart. Think (though not nearly to this level) of rebarb reinforced concrete.

                It's the same way casts are made.
                You get the gauze, you lace it with plaster, the plaster combines into the gauze creating a mesh hard brick like substance just like casts.

                Casts are pretty damn hard.
