Cotto must let Pacquiao sweep up behind elephants

    Michael Marley

This could be merely a simple coincidence but isn’t it funny that hacker Miguel Angel Cotto never “bumped into” fellow Puerto Rico resident and scratch golfer on the links until a fight was being arranged between Cotto and Manny Pacquiao?

I am sure it was just serendipity, happenstance, pure luck that Cotto wound up driving the little white ball for show and putting for dough against Dolla Hoya while his lawyer was battling Bob Arum for a new promotional deal and a bout contract to fight Pacman Nov. 14.

Instead of realizing that lightning has struck him, that he is about to get the biggest pay night of his career, Cotto is snarling with standard fighter chatter.

The Boricua Bomber, it is said, has “news” for Pacman trainer Coach Freddie Roach.

His news flash is that he is no booze and fried food addled weakling like Ricky Hatton and no washed out punched ticket like Oscar was against Megamanny.

Here’s my news flash for Cotto, save the virulent verbiage, Mikey.

Pacquiao Power has already virtually sold out the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

It is the “A side” of this mega bout, meaning the Manny side, which is driving the golden (not Golden Boy) promotional train.

As someone pointed out, it is Pacquaio is right alongside American sexpot Megan Fox is making the Internet search engines hum and purr.

It’s not you, Senor Cotto, you’re a respected champion, sure, but in terms of star power, you’re just a passenger on the Pacquiao Glory Bus.

It is Pacman Power which sells out the casino arenas in Las Vegas.

He can pack the joint in Vegas even with a lesser light such as David Diaz.

You had to fight popular Mexican (well, he was back then) Antonio Margarito to put asses in all the seats in Vegas.

I know, I know, you “own” Madison Square Garden for your pre Puerto Rican Day Parade fights and it wouldn’t matter if Mickey Raton was in the opposite corner. That is part of a weeklong ethnic celebration in the Big Apple.

But your box office magnetism stops somewhere east of Paterson ,NJ.

Pacquiao, who was the Pacific Storm, has now extended his reach globally.

Tocayo, which means we have the same first name, take my advice.

Let Pacman play the Kobe role with you as the aggressive backup point guard who is a valuable minute man rolling off the bench.

Train hard, fight hard and try to destroy Pacland with your fists. This, based on your history, we know you will try valiantly to do.

    The key word is “try.”

As for the rest of it, the controversy, the hype, the gossip and all the other elements of what makes Manny’s world a Barnum & Bailey Circus, leave it alone.

It’s not your thing, you’re not accustomed to it.

You had enough turmoil in the brawl with and then the brick tossing by your uncle and former trainer, Evangelista.

Your best bet, your best chance to win Nov. 14, is to put on the blinkers like a Central Park carriage horse.

The daily distractions Manny deals with?

Dabbling in those can only seal your fight night doom, mi hermano.

Let Manny sweep up after the elephants.

    He is used to it.

The man knows what he's talking about.. great article!

Cotto vs pacman sells better than Pacquiao vs Mosley or Pacquiao vs Berto or Pacquiao vs Clottey.

for sure over berto and clottey.

mosley-pac would be similar to cotto-pac in sales imo.

mosley is not a draw by himself but he has good name recognition.

I think the puertorican following cotto has helps cotto on his end of sales. I just think Roach needs to train and let the fighters do the talking. Have we heard anything from Cotto's trainer? If Pacquiao predicts he'll KO or expose cotto is ok, but when Roach says it, it makes Pacquiao look weak. Pacquiao needs to tell ROACH to shut up, even Pacquiao fans are getting fed up.

                it's just promotion , rob.

cotto and pac are not really big on the promotional end.

when you have a superfight like this......you need someone to talk to constantly make news and keep people talking about the fight.

since roach is a known , big name trainer it falls on him.

cotto and pac are "people's champ" type personalities.

neither want to come off as the bad guy or **** talker.

same thing with pac-hatton that's why floyd sr. and roach was always talking to the media and giving soundbytes.

agree 100% .. when have you ever seen these two talking **** about anyone.. both are very humble and very good champs.. But i do admit Cotto publicly letting Roach know that he isnt a washed up oscar or over-rated ricky was good stuff... sometimes you need a small edge.. and the fact he's seen as the underdog is good for him.. makes him hungry again.. i cant wait for this fight.. hope its a great fight !

Pink, you are probably right. I told my son that this morning. I told him that here we are argueing about catchweight, 147, roach comments and i bet Cotto team and pac team are laughing at all of us. Cotto and Pacquiao respect each other more than pacman/cotto fans respect each other. You never hear cotto talking bad about fighters or Pacquiao talking bad about fighters. I think the 24/7 series will center on their countries more than the fighters....lol
