Some of you like this kind of stuff... I knew David (his legal name is Delvin but EVERYONE from our area knows him as David) when he was around 14, he trained here in Hartford several days a week (he lives about 1 hour away) and I used to travel with him and his coach's team to regional tourney's etc and Delvin often would come away with Outstanding Boxer Awards at shows and tournaments...he was 139 and 147 back then...always reminded me of Oscar in the way he was built but also in the way he had such precise punches for a young amateur, he could really put punches together...anyway, when he was open class there was a young Junior Olympian, age 16, who was also 147 who was about to go from the junior division (15 and 16) to the open class (age 17 and older) and his coach wanted to put him in with Delvin immediately, first fight in the new division...everybody said he was crazy, that Delvin was too sharp and experienced for such a young kid...(Delvin was almost two full years older than the kid)...his coach was confident, though, and put him in the fight... and the kid not only won a decision in his very first open class fight against Delvin but he looked VERY composed and sharp doing it (I was there, it was in Willimantic, Conn.)...that was a big deal around here at the time, definitely an upset...and even with Delvin having advanced so high in the professional game and with him being a favorite to win the IBF title this Saturday I would still pick that kid to beat Delvin even now, right now, today. All these years later.
Interesting tidbit about Delvin Rodriguez (fights for IBF 147 title Saturday)...
