The article overlooks the fact that Cotto will be fined a $million for every pound he is over 145lbs.Why should he be fined for being 146lbs if he's fighting for a 147lbs.It goes without saying the upper cap has to be raised to 147 and not 145.If the 2lbs dont matter why is Manny not willing to go up?
Again this is more like changing the rules once the contract has been signed a normal way of doing thing in Asia but something we frown on in the West.Cotto is also the champion getting 35% of the money because his belt was not meant to be on the line.The negotiations were based on what Cotto and Manny brought to the table,just the goodwill excluding the belt,this is what was valued at 35% for Cotto.The reward risk factors would mean the purse changing if the title is in place because the belt is a tangible simpol of Cotto's championship,it's an endorsement of his abilities.The world out there will remember champions,even Vernon FOrest is talked about as a former champion.Manny needs the titile to break records but he thinks he can keep all the money but it doesnt work like that.Equity theory would mean Cotto not taking that rubbish and if Manny wants to fight Mosley then let him fight Mosley.Cotto will simply not be blackmailed and Cotto is right.
Anyone who thinks Cotto should just give his belt away like that for contention without alteration to the consideration is just plain ignorant and in this information age not worth talking to.
