In a world where the word ‘mandatory’ actually had anything to do with meritorious mandate, Saturday’s Showtime main event would be about boiling the hot Jr. Welterweight class down to something boxing rarely finds.
It would be about boiling the division down to a true number one contender to a superstar champion.
Depending on the course of events through the rest of this year it just might.
Atop the 140 lb. world right now is one Manny Pacquiao (49-3-2, 37 KO). He earned the right to be called champion with a resounding second round knockout of Ricky Hatton in May. For now, Pacquiao is aimed at Miguel Cotto in an almost Welterweight fight and, with a win, should be heading for the ‘Dear God, that’s a lot of money’ bout with Floyd Mayweather.
Cotto will have a lot to say about that. If he says it firmly enough, Pacquiao might be headed back to Jr. Welterweight sooner than later. The odds say no on a Cotto upset but it’s a consideration. If it happens, who will Pacquiao find at 140 waiting with the best claim to face him? [details]
