Instinctively, one would put up a fight to defend oneself and lives of loved ones. That's fine and Vernon did that.

In fact, the guys took off when they realized he wasn't having it.

It should've ended right there and he would've gone home.

If they really wanted to, they could've just shot him on the spot AND taken the car.

But, he chose to chase them AND now his son is fatherless.

I thought they shot him in the trying to take his car! I didn't know he chased them! Why would he chase them? If he warned them off with his gun and they left, why chase them? It was his Girlfriend's son though but I get what you mean! **** is messed up.
