Acosta Shocks Antillon, Enters Lightweight Sweepstakes

By Jake Donovan - Hard work pays off. It’s the lesson we’re always taught in life, and one that came as part of the sales pitch in claiming Urbano Antillon as one of the sport’s future stars.

The Mexican-born lightweight contender still boasts that potential, but the coronation will have to wait a little while longer, thanks to a shocking upset and highlight reel 9th round knockout suffered at the hands of Miguel Acosta on Saturday evening at the Grand Mayan in Nuevo Vallarta, Nayarit, Mexico.

The bout served as the makeshift co-main event for the Latin Fury 10 pay-per-view telecast. It was originally to be headlined by Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, who pulled out of the show last week after citing a rib injury reportedly suffered in training camp. [details]

i always believe antillon was the better fighter in that fight, but acosta was ready and packs some surprise. i thought antillon's camp did not scout well acosta's fighting style, or probably took for granted acosta's record, but acosta scouted well how to counter antillon's attack. antillon never find a way how to counter that hit-and-run technique until it pays off in the ninth. acosta moved from left to right to confused antillon's attack, lunged ocassionally that left hook to the head. antillon was get caught with that uppercut several times but did not do anything to avoid getting hit until he was hit in the ninth.

but what i appreciate so much of antillon is his graceful acceptance of defeat. acknowledging defeat to the fans is a rare spectacle nowadays. only very few fighters do it. that gesture would compensate the fans eagerness to see him fight.

i still root for antillon in a rematch.

You would have thought Antillon would at least be accustomed to the whole hit and run style of boxing with all the sparring he's done with manny pacquiao.

WoW!!!! I'm surprised by the result. I was rooting for urbano to win because I saw a lot of his fights shown here in the Philippines. On the other hand,I don't have any idea who acosta is.

This is a wake up call for antillon, I still think he would one day become a world champion.

I thought Acosta will get robbed!!!
I can't imagine one of the Commentators (the one who interviewed the fighters after the fight) score Even after 6 Rounds~

As a neutral fan, though i root for Antillon, there's no way that fight is 3-3 after 6 rnd...

Despite the loss, I like Antillon for being sportsman!
I believed, he still has a bright future and become a world Champ soon!

If Amir Khan can do, so is Antillon!
