Hopkins doesn't throw many shots period and he uses his left hand as a range finder and/or to confuse his opponents to set up his right hand and considering how defensive minded he is he probably doesn't want to use the jab because he can possibly be countered with right hands over the top. He has a pretty good jab when he actually uses it though.
